Some of you may remember that I had a ’69 383 Formula “S” back in the day. (Red, too!) Well, Fay Wray, hold onto your undies if you get a ride in this one!
The weather was threatening rain (again), but Tom Middleton & his friend John still showed up in a ’69 Cuda with ’68 trim. I asked for details & was invited to join them in the air conditioned bar. ;)

It’s a ’68 Super Stock clone with 528 cid & aluminum heads @ 12-1/2 to 1 compression. Custom Weiland intake; Crane cam .650 lift @ 284 duration; 5500 rpm J Stahl torque converter; 5.13 Dana rear end; 1050 Dominator carbs; 200hp NOS fogger nitrous system; Fiberglass front end; 4-wheel disc brakes.
W/out nitro: 9.5 sec @ 850 bhp.
With: 8.5 sec @ 1050 bhp

Bruce, it's yours for only $70,000!

Darren, I just had a look through your site, and it looks like you're pretty serious about shooting cars. ;)
I noticed several cars like this one for example that I'll link to here, http://www.dealphotography.com.au/deal/displayimage.php?album=1&pos=63 that I found on your site. Now this has all the earmarks of being a 68/69/70 Dodge Dart as we know it here in The States. What is it called over there in OZ?
Thanks, Bruce

Excellent car, but he must not have the combo optimized yet beacuse the NHRA SS/AA '68 Cudas are running in the 8's with ease on just racing gas alone, no NOS.

By the way I think it was 2 yrs ago the fastest SS/AA Cuda changed hands at the US Nationals for $125,000 CASH!!!

Tim, Are We talking 1/8th or 1/4 mile?

1/4 mile. The SS/AA record was set 11/04, 8.53 @ 153.83mph. The top cars in the class all run in the 8's, in good air. Last year at Indy, 21 Hemi Cudas, and Darts showed up for class eliminations in SS/AA.

This is the final in SS/AA last year. The car I cut off won. Jeg Coughlin drove the winning car. Funny thing is before his first race of the day, he admitted he had never driven a Hemi Cuda, ever. He just proved once again that he can drive just about anything and win.

I kept telling the kid across the street to just get his Dart to the point where you can have fun with it 'cause there's always someone else who's going to be a bit faster. He worked for Raush & got a lot of free work done, upgraded it over a year, (re)finished it late last September, took it to the strip & spun a cam bearing. Now he's sold it & got 2 ATVs! ;-)

I saw Tom tonight and asked him if "King Kong" was detuned for the street. He said that no, it's tuned for the street & he puts on about 2,500 miles a year. It will turn the times I posted anytime he asks it to.
The NHRA cars will turn 8's for a few runs. Then they're done. ;-)

There not done, they just need some tender loving care. They will run 8's all day long however. I saw it first hand last year. One round after another, 8 second run after 8 second run. Yes they require a lot more maintenance than your typical Super Stocker. Really all Super Stockers are on the edge, and obviously never street driven. After qualifying, SS is just a bracket race unless you come up against a car in your class, then it's heads up, first to the finish line wins. They SS/AA guys may detune slightly for eliminations, but they can't let up too much, because they may race another SS/AA car. These guys are real dedicated racers, and are by far the most popular racers at the US Nats, besides the pros. They all for the most part pit in the same place at Indy, and after each round people are crawling all over the place to get a look at the cars. I know it is why I still show up for at least Friday, to see them all race each other in SS/AA eliminations.

After each race I'm sure the motors are gone through, but not to the extent of a nitro motor. Obviously though, no SS/AA car is going to survive 2,500 miles on the street. I wonder what Unocal 108 octane, leaded racing gas goes for per gallon now!!!

PhotosGuy
8th of July 2005 (Fri), 05:52
After each race I'm sure the motors are gone through, but not to the extent of a nitro motor. I've been told that it used to cost $40,000 a weekend to run a top fueler! Now, with higher tire costs, it's even more. That's a BIG bag of "L"s!

The story from one of my friends is that, 20 years ago we used to get these 8 sec. SS/AA guys here that wanted to run for big $s. They'd trailer it in & then drive it the last half-mile or so & try to promote a race. The "suckers" from Detroit would say that there are too many police around watching for them & suggest another place to race, back then it was a freeway under construction. So they'd drive these guys around for a while 'till they were suitably detuned. ;-)

Another top fueler story. With the engine right behind your head, the vibration is so bad that you can't see because everything is shaking so much. With the high "G" loading, your eyes are also affected & it's very difficult to steer.
Asked how he gets to the end of the track with those problems, the guy said that "he didn't have a clue". He just did!
Personally, I'll just stick with a straightaway with 13 turns at the end, thank you very much! ;-)

I think it has something to do with the way my brain was rattling around from the sound of the exhaust? :D

...closer to 100k now. Considering my paltry racing budget decades ago, I'd have thought that was amazing until I heard that it costs Danica Patrick's team that 100K every time she over revs in a downshift! Seems she hasn't got the hang of the paddles yet. ;)
