Just wondering what people think regarding how My Documents starts out on a fresh install of Windows. (poll above)

I set up my own folders for stuff, on a drive other than the OS drive....so I really don't care what that does.

I never use the 'my documents' folder so don't really care how it starts.

Just move the music and pictures etc. to another location...

I just wish I didn't have to drill down to the my pictures folder and the next thing is, when I navigate up one level in the "my pictures folder" WHY do I have to start at the beginning? Drives me nuts!

It does come completely empty. Here's the tree as per default Windows user profile as of Windows 6.x (Vista/Win7 : 6.0/6.1)
%USERPROFILE%/Documents
%USERPROFILE%/Downloads
%USERPROFILE%/Music
%USERPROFILE%/Pictures
%USERPROFILE%/Videos
%USERPROFILE%/AppData
%USERPROFILE%/Desktop
%USERPROFILE%/Favorites
%USERPROFILE%/Links
%USERPROFILE%/Contacts
%USERPROFILE%/Saved Games

There's nothing in the Documents directory.

Now if you're talking about your home directory, that's a different thing - but your home directory is never referred to as "My Documents" - it contains far more than documents, including your application data, your user registry hive, among other things. Take a look in $Users/username/AppData ( Windows Vista/7/Server 2008 ) or $Users/username/Application Data ( Windows 2000/XP/Server 2003 )

Also, worth noting, %USERPROFILE% is a completely valid replacement for your user directory. Try it - start -> run -> %USERPROFILE%/Documents (or %USERPROFILE%/My Documents in 2000/XP/Server 2003) ;)

You don't, just click the 'Pictures' shortcut.
Why are you navigating up one level?

You don't open many files from inside of Photoshop do you?

No I don't and can see what you mean now - I usually use Lightroom and send them to PS that way.
If I need to open files directly in PS I tend to leave open an explorer window and just drag and drop them from there rather than using the 'open' command - much easier IMO!

assuming of course that the thumbnails for CR2 work properly in windows exploder, your method is definitely easier. Also using bridge or the PS elements organizer will save a lot of grief over time.

+3... I simply changed the location of my 'Pictures' folder to the root of my 1Tb 'M' drive.

I have three internal drives. One of them is just pictures. They are also backed up on an external and DVD.
