I see this word "bokeh" used a lot, but I can't find a defination for it. Can someone enlighten me on the meaning of this word?
Thanks,

There are lots of articles/books/threads about it, however....
It is a Japanese word essentially describing the out-of-focus portion of a shot (generally behind the subject). Primarily influenced by the optical lens elements and iris construction.
Having a soft background does not mean you have Bokeh, but it is part of the equation.
I have a Canon 70/200f2.8 that gives me what I call buttery-smooth Bokeh. Expensive lenses are no guarantee that they will have 'good Bokeh'. Second party lenses can provide this quality also.
It is an intersting topic, but a subjective one. Wide open to opinion. Great topic for this winter! Now go out and shoot til yer finger won't work and forgetaboutit.
