Two shots taken while we were out looking for things to take. Past by the stable and the horses were out eating so, I thought maybe this would be the best time to get some shots. Both were taken with the 70-200L IS as I can remember. Hope you enjoy them as much as I enjoyed taking them.

you have to get a horses attention, they always look at you from an angle since the see mostly to the sides, so it works out, ears forward, head up...dont be afraid (pending you have the owners permission, usually they will assit) in getting out in the field, taking a bucket of feed and shaking it up, they usually will run around, give some better motion/actions to pull out their more detailed muscles and personality...best still shots come from a full stop after a trot, they perk up and give a higher sense of attention...
white fences are a pain when exposing for the horses coat, so be weary of the time of day you go shoot, early morning is generally better, but ive shot at all times of day...just try not to get that blasted out highlight look int he BG, keep it blurred yet colorful

Thanks jforj143...appreciate you looking. Also, thanks blinking8s...when I took these I was behind the fence and I said to myself I am not going to get close to these horses. I saw one of them biting the other one and no way was I going to let him bite me. I think the owner was inside giving one of the horses new shoes as we talked to him so, I could only take the pictures from afar without bugging him. I will keep that in mind and ask him next time. I want to get the eyes in the photo.

Hi guys, this is my first post in this section of P.O.T.N. I enjoyed your photos of the horses. I've been taking horse photos for quite a few years now. My wife and I have owned two Quarter Horses for the last 15 years. My wife is Treasurer of a Therapeutic Riding Program at a barn where we board our two. I got railroaded into being the photographer for the program for the last three years now. As blinking8s mentioned you have a devil of a time getting those ears up!!! The lady that runs the program wanted to do a photo shoot two years ago in the late fall for people to give as Christmas Presents. Myself and another college girl that was taking up photography in college took the pictures. At the end of the day my wife and I decided to take pictures of our two near this pond on the farm. We had another lady take the pictures with my point and shoot that I had at the time. It took us 32 pictures to get the just right picture with the ears up on both of them!!! The other lady that had my point and shoot camera threw some leaves up in the air. The ears went up and she snaped the picture. It was perfect!! I have also been to the All American Quarter Horse Congress in Columbus, Ohio. I have seen photographers there remove their ball caps off their heads and throw them up in the air also. Like Blinking8s mentioned about the rattling of feed in a bucket. The Riding Program did another photo shoot of two different ponys at this local mall just before Christmas. It was outside a Tractor Supply Store and they gave us a plastic container with some treats in it. One of the girls that was helping out would rattle it everytime I'd go to take a picture. We got the ears up just about everytime. Hope this helps some of you out to get that just right picture with ears up. Tom

Looks great. I love how I can see the veins on the shoulder in the first picture. Horses are amazing.
