Any problems for anyone? Read the threads 40/60 Love/hate. Going to get one tomorrow and was wondering if I could mount my tripod directly to the grip and use my 70-200 f4 without any problems? I noted the problems with flash and portrait with spacing. anything else?

Thanks

I know what you mean. I've thought about it and if I had to use a tripod, I would definately prefer to use a lens collar. Primary concern is possible contact problem with the camera/grip. I carry my f4 around all the time using just the hand strap, so the mount can certainly take the lens weight easily. I use more caution with my f2.8 and of course the 100/400 (that baby gets LONG).
Concern is tapping a tripod leg with a foot and overbalancing the rig. Tough call.

I mount my 20D w/24-70 f/2.8 to my tripod all the time, no problems so far. It can get a little topheavy though, depending on the tripod you're using. I'd use the a tripod collar for any of the Canon 70-200s although it can be done without one.

In my opinion, you would be way ahead getting a lens collar (with a tripod mount) for the long lens. I wouldn't want to put the extra torque on the body or the grip caused by heavier, and especially longer heavier, lenses which could have the lens collars on them.

I think that the reason the larger heavier lenses have tripod collar is not because the camera mount can't handle the weight but rather the rig is out of balance. The heavier and larger pieces of glasses are in the front of the lens. This cause a shift of weight baising toward the front. Which might tip over like Dolly Pardon!!!

I assume that if the lens is designed to have a collar, there is no reason for not using it and a lot of reasons for using it. Personally, it makes me feel safer. I have the collar almost always installed on both the 70-200 and the 35-350. It does not bother me too much while shooting handheld and can be handy for carrying (hang it in your belt if the neck strap is long enough).

The Canon 70-200mm f4.0 is much smaller lens than the f2.8 version. Canon ships the f4.0 lens without a collar for it. It's kind of a toss up whether or not you choose to use the collar or not. I don't think it will mess anything up if you don't buy and use a collar. It is kind of annoying though as sometimes the camera will start rotating down of the tripod mount if you shoot vertically (portrait) because the weight is a little off balanced.

You have several variations of my original answer.

I wouldn't, to much risk in IMHO.
