Irfanview (free image viewing program) has been able to view my Drebel RAW files for a while now (probably viewing the embedded JPG). So what's the point of this thing from MS?

Irfanview (free image viewing program) has been able to view my Drebel RAW files for a while now (probably viewing the embedded JPG). So what's the point of this thing from MS?I've been trying to figure this myself. I suppose for some it might be easier to organize them if you can see them. I'm used to giving files meaningful names so this doesn't really do much for me. I'll give try though, you never know.

I'm pretty sure what I just installed was 7 MB of RAW viewer and 40MB of MS sanctioned mandatory Spyware for keeping track of valid OS registration (on the surface) and who knows what much more insidious info tracking and reporting crap that the .net framework does.

My guess is that MS will know all our RAW exif now for some reason.....

But then .. I'm paranoid...

Where's my Tinfoil hat.... ?

There's no signing up for anything, and the 50mb file size is because it includes the .Net framework in case you don't already have it installed. It actually works really well, and worth the download if you view thumbnails in Explorer

But then .. I'm paranoid...Where's my Tinfoil hat.... ?I'm paranoid too, but anyone with a broadband internet connection has worse things to worry about than Microsoft.

It was pretty seamless. There is an option to download without validating Windows, which I selected. After the restart I opened a folder full of .CRW files in Windows Explorer, switched to thumbnail view, and voila! Double-clicking opens the viewer (if you set it up that way), and I think I'm going to like the slideshow option for "post chimping." It's nice to see the images full-screen.

Many thanks to shkspr for the link!

Ok its only usefull for quick proofs because you cant edit it but still better than having to open another program up.

You don't have to wait for MS, I've been using a free shell extension from dpMagic for Canon RAW files for sometime. As well it's only a 1.7mb download compared to MS 50mb.

Ah! Its for XP and only XP! They seem to have ensured that users of older versions of Windows can't use this. The website says it is for XP and "This program is not recommended for use on any other version of Windows."

MS is gently trying to push you to upgrade!!

Ron, the MS one will show the image full screen when you double click on it. you can also run a slide show or right click to print.
I didnt think the free dpmagic viewer could do this.
also its been pointed out that the file size for the viwer is only about 7mb and the rest is made up of .net 1.1 which is needed.
I dont think there is anyway to seperate them yet.

I may have run into a snag with this. I processed a couple tiffs from raw in RSE, & tried to save a 3 layer image. Got "Can't save as the image is being used in another program". Had to use Save As.
Tried to delete the original tiff in explorer & got the same thing. Couldn't move files to the desktop so I could drag them into the bin.
I'll see what happens after I reboot later, but I suspect that the problem is that the viewer is using the files & causing the problem.

The free community edition will do slide shows and full screen previews, I don't think you can print form it but I wouldn't do that even if it could. I don't know about the MS file size, the page says 50mb, I haven't dowloaded it nor will I since I've already got all the functionality I need. Actually more since all I want to do is browse thumbs to quickly find a file.

I wasn't saying one was better than the other just pointing out that there have been third party shell extensions to view RAW files in WindowsXP Explorer almost since Win XP was introduced, I had one back in 2002 for my D60, MS has came late to the party :).

Ron, sorry didnt mean to imply you were saying one was better.
I also had dpmagic ce and when ever i double clicked on a cr2 file PSCS2 would open rather than XP picture/fax viewer showing it at fdull screen
i must admit i didnt go into the settings for it, just didnt realise it could do it.

Not at all:D . I must admit I didn't go into the settings much myself, I just wanted the thumbnail views in explorer and on my desktop that's all I have, the files themselves are associated with RAWShooter Essentials but when I replaced my laptop last year I downloaded and installed DPmagic on it and found it did include a viewer similar to the XP Picture Fax viewer that did most of the same things.

Just downloaded it, and I must say its rather nice. I did at one time have a thumbnailer (forget which program) that did a decent job but this RAW Viewer from MS is much faster. I give it two thumbs up. Kind of rare that MS actually does something well, which they did this time IMO.

Thanks for sharing your experience. Sounds as if the viewer is a bit "clingy" as it latches a hold of files.

Four minor issues with the XP RAW Viewer:

1 Deleting files with it: corresponding THM-files are not deleted (it is obvious that they are left there if RAW viewer doesn't know about them). Also the "Are you sure you want to delete?" defaults to "no" causing one extra keystroke.

2 It doesn't remember window state: It never opens maximized.

3 It only shows unedited data

4 only some of the EXIF data is displayed, it seems that the THM-files are totally ignored. This is probably to gain additional speed.

Extremely fast tool for quickly browsing RAW pictures, I will frequently use it :)

Picasa2 is great as a viewer / organizer. I'm also impressed with its modest editing capability. I hope they add support for *.cr2 files.

The Microsoft newsgroups are often very effective, and Microsoft people spend a lot of time answering questions this way. Not sure whether the RAW viewer will be covered as it is "unsupported", but you could try ...

I think the most relevant group is "Windows XP Photos". You can get to the online newsreader at http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/expertzone/newsgroups.mspx.

It only shows unedited dataI have discovered this too, and it sorta bugs me.

If I have an underexposed image and use DPP to crank up the exposure comp, then save the changes, you'd think the MS thumbnailer/viewer could read that too, but it doesn't, even after refreshing the folder. It only displays the image with original shot settings.

Miika

It's the same version regardless of the date.

The newer (the 47.7 MB full installer) file is a little bit smaller than the 6/18 version - but no functional difference. (I de-installed the first one, downloaded and installed the newer one).

Probably they have fixed a typo in the README, thus the new compression for installer.

I'm with CDS on the MS ".net" crap being mostly for Microsoft's benefit, rather than the user. Each new MS product comes with more background crap that fills up disks, chokes processors and eats RAM until there's not enough of anything left to run your applications in.

But MS sure has good stats on your workflow . . . .

Then dont upgrade any MS products. if it works why change it.
I assume if your running a PC your using XP. XP is only there to run other programs and if .net is a part of that whats the problem?
thats like saying XP is more for MS benifit rather than the end user.
Yes its all getting very bloated but thats because we insist on more functions and the original version of XP couldnt handle it. dont forget XP has been out for a few years now

Im not sticking up for MS but some people seem to kick MS no matter what they do.

I recently downloaded the RAW viewer off of the windows site. After installation it was great being able to view my RAW images without having the use the canon viewer. Then I realized that I had a minor problem. I could no longer delete files in windows explorer. I kept getting an error about the file was opened by another application. I then uninstalled the RAW viewer and I am able to delete files again.

Has anyone else encountered this issue?

I have been shooting RAW in my 10D and this would have been a great short cut to weed out the bad shots prior to other applications.
