Lots of detracting elements in the photo. Not sure what direction or action is being shown, sport photos need action.

I think it's easy to see what is going on in the photo if you've spent much time around skiing and snowboarding, otherwise I can see exactly what you mean.
And what are the detracting elements in both photos?
Thanks

We know that the skiers are in action, but the photos don't show it. In #2, it 'looks' like he's just standing there. Keep shootin' !

time to try some panning? that would put the other elements in a blur, and focus on the action of the subject.

Good idea. I'll have to lower my shutter speed substantially next night shoot I do.

Don't take offense to this, 'cause I doubt I could do better, but they look like snapshots to me. The background is distracting and they are very static feeling (the motion thing mentioned before). Maybe try a different angle. Try getting down low and shooting up as they come past. That will help with the backgrounds and hopefully give it less of a snapshot feel.
Good luck!

I'm going to say the same thing about getting down low. If you are comparing any of these shots to skate boarding shots... you always see that one guy laying on the ground or that one person keeping the video camera very low.
Is it possible to shoot them during the day? it's hard enough getting moving objects, but in the dark... uggh just creates more problems.

Usually I'm the guy on the ground, but you see, laying on the ground in the middle of a competition in 18 degrees below zero ( not farenheit!!!) gets very old very quickly LOL! And yes there will be many more shots taken, mostly daytime. These were night only because of the competition.
