They are different file formats. They come from different cameras. The .crw is an older format. It was followed by .cr2 and in .cr2 there are even 2 different formats, the newer of the 2 used by the Rebel XT and a few other cameras.
To "see" these different file formats, the editing/conversion program must have a program designed to recognize them. Adobe Photoshop modifies its RAW conversion programs to recognize the different RAW formats as they are released. You can often keep up with the changes by downloading from Adobe new plugins to modify their RAW conversion abilities.
The latest version of .cr2 needed a new plugin from Adobe (ACR 3.1) and you can download that to read the new RAW files. THE CATCH IS Adobe made this plugin to work ONLY on CS2 and Elements 3.
You can get a complete list of what plugins work with what cameras from Adobe.com.
Other RAW conversion programs, including the one shipped with your Canon camera will work with the newer files also.
Hope this was helpful.

This is inaccurate. I was able to install it under CS and open and manipulate .cr2 files
edit...v 3.1 is only for cs2, but there is a version for cs that allows you to open .cr2 files

Yes, you can open some .cr2 files in CS, but not the .cr2 files from the Rebel XT. They are 2 different file formats even though they are both called .cr2.

You can open 350D files in CS *if* you convert them to DNG-files first and use Camera Raw 2.4.
Camera Raw 3.1 only works with CS2 and Elements 3 (and is required if you want to open the 350D files without converting them first).
