-Updated with more accurate info/ battery types

So you want to buy batteries for your Canon DSLR ?
don’t want to spend 50+ bucks a pop for the Canon ones ?

read on, by the way pictures are at the bottom of the post.

I researched this subject quite a bit earlier on as well since I can't afford another $1000 dollar camera I wanted to be 100% sure they wouldn't mess up my nice new camera. First of all I’m talking mainly about the batteries from Sterlingtek. Another important thing you should know is that mah stands for milliamp hours. The larger this is the longer it will last in your Camera.
My camera is the Rebel XT which takes NB 2LH batteries, but many users on this forum have bought bp-511's from them which fit the DRebel,20D,10D,D30,D60

NB2L or NB2LH ?:
One thing about Sterlingtek is that the nb2lh that canon makes is their nb2l. Canon’s NB2L is 570mah and their NB2LH is 720 (H stands for high capacity). Sterlingtek's are called NB2L but really should be called NB2LH.

1100mah vs 1500mah and 7.2v vs 7.4v :
on their website the batteries claim to say "7.2V Li-Ion 1100mAh"
the ones I received and I believe all other POTN users have received are labeled 7.4v just like the OEM Canon's and they aren’t 1100mah they are 1500mah (better for us J) besides when the battery is fully charged it will show well over 8v..and when it is drained it shows around 7.4. I would personally never allow a single cell lithium battery to get below 7.4v..
In the picture you can see the voltmeter with the battery fully charged and then when the battery is discharged (Note: the battery wasn’t fully drained when I took it out of the camera, if it was, I believe it would be close to 7.4v)

As some, at first i was skeptical of getting after-market batteries. To add another layer of "piece of mind" I use a battery grip. My hands are large anyways and the grip helps a lot with a small camera such as the XT. I know there are aftermarket grips available, but i happen to own a canon one and love it.

Price:
Now price… you can go to their site directly and order BUT, you can get the same price through amazon, and i find amazon keeps even their third party sellers to a higher level of customer service, returns etc.

Now, if we could only find a place that sells the little battery covers that Canon sends you with theirs we’d be all set.

(i know there are other brands of aftermarket batteries. I have personally only used OEM Canon batteries and Sterlingtek batteries. I included links for both.)

Now please read this part carefully!

I personally don't charge batteries unattended. This advice i got from my RC Airplane days. Lithium cells can be more temperamental if overcharged, etc. Keep them away from flammables, kids, dogs while charging.

If you take care of your gear and dispose of cells after they start losing charge chances are very good that nothing will ever happen. For your enjoyment here's what happens when you purposefully overcharge a Lithium polymer battery. Note this was a large battery used for RC purposes, manually overcharged on purpose, Fast Forward to 32 seconds.

Sorry to hear that you didn't get the covers. I have the Old Rebel and it takes the BP-511.
Thanx for the info on the NB2LH, I use it for my DVCam.

I bought 6 of these, to get the free shipping. It would have been about the same cost as paying shipping. Sold one to a friend and have the others in my bag. I have never had a problem with them, highly recommend. Also, I recieved them very fast after placing my order.

Felix,

Thanks for the post. I found it to be invaluable. I am leaving for Kilimanjaro in two weeks and was in the market to get a couple of extra batteries for my Canon Rebel XT. You saved me a hundred bucks.

Thanks again!

Id get 3rd party batterys, but i would only use them inside the battery grip. WHY?

Just incaise it leaked, i dont want it to damage the inside of my camera housing.

ive used the sterlingtek batteries in my camera for a while now and others have also
and i dont remember one person saying anything about damaging the camera..

EastGear is also selling replacement batteries. The one I've just got for my 20D is in an EastGear pack but is labelled "Camera Devices CP-BP511A 7.4V 1800mAh". I put it in my shopping cart from http://www.eastgear.com/shop/product_info.php?cPath=29_35&products_id=85, so not exactly as depicted, but otherwise good. True the price is higher than Sterlingtek, but if you're ordering something else from EastGear anyway you'll save on shipping. Delivery was 3 days from Singapore to New Zealand.

Interesting link - 3 days delivery is handy, but the batteries cost a little more than sterlingtek - $18.15 c.f. $11.99. Sterlingtek take about 4 weeks to deliver to NZ if you pay for standard international shipping, less if you pay for express.

I'll need some more batteries before long, i'll probably order from Sterlingtek.

The NB2-L batteries I bought from Eforcity (in the US) on ebay cost me about $10 each I think from memoery postage included. The batteries were like $1.40 US from memory and the rest was P&H. Took about 6-7 days to get to me in Australia.

Update: I purchased 3 of the 511's for my Drebel back in March of 2004. They all still work great. I use them in my Rebel and now my canon DV. I have used them in the grip and camera and dv and left them unused for months at a time with no issues whatsoever.

FWIW.

Yeah you scared me too. Two 1800mAh BP-511's just arrived yesterday. I never had a problem using aftermarket batteries on my Nikon D70 so I guess I shouldn't have to worry about them on my 20D. btw, they were only $26 for both.

The Rebel XT comes with a 720 mAh battery. I recently bought some 1000 mAh batteries on eBay from everydaysource for $1.49 each. Even after shipping the total price for two came to under $14 US. Sure it's not 1800mAh, but it beats paying $89 Canadian for Canon.

Ah. The XT is the odd one out, unless someone specified it i'd assume it was the BP511 series that the other prosumer cameras use.

I'm interested in getting some extra batteries for my 20d, so I checked out SterlingTec.

I noticed two different types of BP-511 batteries.

BP-511
http://www.sterlingtek.com/ln03-canon-bp-511-dlc511.html

BP-511A
http://www.sterlingtek.com/cabpbapaeq.html

I see that both have 1800 mAh and are the same price, so what is the differance? Looking at the pdf manual for the 20d I see that it is suppose to come with the BP-511A battery. Which battery should I purchase?

tim
30th of November 2005 (Wed), 02:53
I would bet that those are the same battery. The "A" represents a high capacity battery that shipped with the 20D, AFAIk that's the only difference betwen 511 and 511A - capacity.

Thanks. I thought that might be the case. I just thought it was weird that they would have two listings for the same battery, and have the same power outage. I guess in this case, A is not for high capacity since both have the same capacity. I'll probably grab the 511 just because it feels safer :)

Hey hey,

Just noticed this thread. I am also looking to buy some extra canon (or canon-ish) batteries, coincidently for a trip to Mount Kilimanjaro. 4 spare batteries for £32 sounds like a bargain.

Have any of you had any problems with these sterlingtek batteries? Trying to make my mind up between spending £45 on canon batteries or go the third party route.

TIA, munchy

I've had no problems at all. I bought two of them when I first got my camera and haven't even had the chance to try my 'stock' battery that came with the camera because these are in the grip 100% of the time.

Do you think they are the real deal? That would work out to $14.99 for the first battery and 12.99 for each additional battery. They do look like the OEM.

They're OEM. Why risk using an unknown seller on ebay when so many people report sterlingtek to be excellent? Saving $5 or whatever isn't worth the risk to me, even though the risk isn't high. Sterlingtek batteries are marked at a higher capacity too - 1800 instead of 1400.

I would not worry about damage to your camera. The web site for Sterling Tek had the following information:

Generic - 3rd Party NB-2LH Lithium-Ion Battery (7.4v 720mAh) for Canon Digital Cameras
Manufacturer: Canon - Part Number: 9612A001

Note that it appears that Canon is manuacturing the batteries.

I just got 2 for my 10D and 20D. They seem very able batteries. I purchased a Maxell battery from WalMart or some other store and have used it, but it isn't nearly as dependable. I think I will order from Sterlingtek again if these run out (which I doubt in the next 5 years).

The first battery is chargin' now! Will let you all know how I get on.

Another vote for Sterlingtek. I've been using their batteries for a couple years now with very good results. Their service is superb. I ordered a couple more of their 1800 mah BP511's on March 1st 06 in the PM, and they were in my mailbox today, March 4th.
At $11.99 each through their site, they're tough to beat. :D

Thanks - I was investigating batteries for both the 350D and 20D... but put the wrong body in my text! :o
I'm confused though about the different batteries - looking at the info I can find, they appear to have similar outputs available. I presume Cannon have given differnet models/specs for differing purposes - but what are they!

I got a spare battery for my 300d from 7 day shop its unbranded, I have been using for 6months so far, and cannot tell any difference between it and the canon original. (sorry not a very scientific test!) They are now selling 2 for £9.99 so plan to go back and get a couple more. THe only down side is that they don't come with the plastic clip cover that prevents shorting - anyone know a cheap source for these? Jon
12th of April 2006 (Wed), 09:24
The BP-512 is a BP-511 equivalent. The BP-514 is a BP-511A equivalent. The difference between the BP-511/511A and the BP-512/514 is that the BP-512/514 were made for use with Canon's video cameras, so don't have the channel down the outside back; rather they're straight across there for a smoother look. This is because the video cameras have the battery exposed (they make higher-capacity batteries that are bigger, so an enclosed battery compartment wouldn't work). Functionally, they're identical to their counterparts, except earlier Canon DSLRs (D30, D60) can't take the BP-512/514 - the battery compartment has a lip that conforms to the BP-511/511A channel.

I had a quick question and maybe it was covered in the thread somewhere, but can you still use your cannon battery charger with the sterlingtek batteries? Or do you need to buy a specific charger?

The “generics” are such a bargain compared to OEMs it not worth mentioning but strictly speaking the Sterlingtek LN63 is your best value. It 35% better value than the ST65 (taking maH and S/H into account) and you get the extra 100maH. Individually available at pricegrabber only. By the way the ACD-239 works out to be 25% better deal than the ST65

Seriously, I would buy from an ebay seller as long as His or Her feedback looked OK, and the battery specs match my needs. I would want to see feedback for them from customers that have bought batteries from them, and are happy.
Buyer beware.
There are plenty of good sellers on ebay, and I have had many transactions there with good luck. There are also a few that are not so good.
Check their feedback.

It shouldn't matter since the camera will use up the sterlingtek one until it has reached 700mah then it will use both the canon and the sterlingtek.

I ordered 2 BP511 replacements for my 30D from Sterlingtek and both of them get stuck in the battery compartment of the camera. I had to use a flat head screw driver to wiggle the battery out. The original battery pops out just fine when moving the battery release (spring works fine). I'll be calling them tomorrow for a replacement. I hope the replacements won't be the same. Has anybody experienced this problem?

You may want to cancel that order as I just got mine and it's still defective and will get stuck in your camera. So if you want, you can file the battery down before you put it in. But if you don't, it will get jammed in the grip and you will have to pry it out with something.

Why would't you tape the contacts? It prevents shorts and comes off easy in 2 seconds. If you just throw the batteries in a small bag or container with a half dozen of them I doubt shorting will be an issue, the contacts are recessed.

Tandem

I bought six of the batteries at the same time so the shipping was free. Mine came in little cardboard boxes.

I keep two charged ones on my desk, contacts down, to replace the ones coming out of my camera after an event. The used two are then charged up and put back on the desk. I keep one spare in my pocket with the plastic plate on it that came with the original battery and another spare in my camera bag inside the little cardboard box it came in.

Are you saying that your batteries didn't come in a box? You might be able to make do with a plastic snack bag. Those are about half the size of a sandwich baggie.

Actually, The tape idea sounds good, and probably works fine, it's just that I'm a stickler for keeping the contacts clean, and all the tape I've had experience with seems to leave remnants of its adhesive behind.

Just bought two 2000mah BP-511 cells from Sterlingtek. Apparently, they're still shipping ones that jam in the battery compartment. I had to trim some plastic, as documented elsewhere.

I'm not sure how Sterlingtek came up with the 2000mah rating. I discharged one through a Duratrax ICE charger and it discharged only about 1400 mah before reaching the cutoff voltage. This seems consistent with the fact that a BP-511 uses two 18500 Li-Ion cells, which generally come in 1400 mah capacities.

You should have no problems. The NB2LH is Canon's designation for a high-capacity NB2L. The Sterlingtek NB2L has the capacity of a Canon NB2LH.

OK, so now I'm confused.

Looking at Strelingtek, I see that the BP-511 (http://www.sterlingtek.com/ln03-canon-bp-511-dlc511.html) they sell has a rating of 2000 mAh, and the BP-511A (http://www.sterlingtek.com/cabpbapaeq.html) only of 1800 mAh. I thought that the first one had higher capacity.

So the question is, which of those two should I buy for a Canon Digital Rebel? Is there an advantage of one vs. the other?

Jon
4th of January 2007 (Thu), 15:16
Canon's names are for Canon's batteries. Sterlingtek is selling third-party batteries (and changes suppliers every so often, I believe) and isn't concerned with matching Canon's specific names. Doesn't matter whether the battery's billed as a BP-511, BP-511A, BP-512, BP-514 or "20D Battery"; they'll all work in the D30, D60, 10D, 300D, 20D,30D and 5D (well, the BP512 and 514 won't fit in the D30 or D60).
