I am the proud new owner of a 100-400 L IS. The owners manual is not too clear (at least in my opinion) which setting to use for a given application. Any one care to explain when I might want to use #1 and when to switch to #2 ? I primarily take wildlife photos but will start shooting more sporting events now.

Use mode #2 when tracking moving subjects. ie cars, cheetas, motorcycles, etc.

I think the IS can actually introduce shake (minor) by trying to cancel movement that isn't there when on a tripod (the later versions of IS detect this & turn themselves off).

And, yes, you can use it for panning (or is that pitching?) up and down, too. And diagonally, as a matter of fact. :)

The ol' film and video guy just has to speak -
You PAN left and right
You TILT up and down
You ZOOM in and out
All three axes are acount for.
Navigation (space/water/air)
Vehicular motion
PITCH= front moves up and down (hobby horse)
YAW = front moves from side to side
ROLL = tips from left to right to left etc.
All three gets you seasick.

Well, only the new generation of IS can auto-detect the presence of tripod. Unfortunately 100-400L uses an older generation of IS but it's still my dream lens nonetheless. :)
