View Full Version : Dimensions of the pictures (RAW) in the DPP?

Hi, I just notice something strange when using the DPP. The RAW file opened in DPP is smaller (in dimensions as in width and height pixels) than the JPG (as shot or after converted). Does anyone notice this? And why does the RAW file smaller (in dimensions, not file size) than the converted JPG? Thanks.

Welcome to POTN :)
The pixel count should be identical in the RAW and the JPG, if it's not it's usually user error. Hopefully someone who knows more about DPP can help you, I use CS2 so I don't know anything about DPP.

When I open RAW files from the DRebel in DPP and open the info window, they are 3072x2048 pixels, just like the jpegs.
What pixel count are you getting?

I'm sorry about confusion but I meant ZoomBrowser EX. The DPP show RAW files with the correct dimensions. The ZoomBrowser show the RAW files smaller than the actual dimensions. This is really strange. I even compare the original RAW with the converted JPG one and the RAW file show up smaller than the JPG one in the ZoomBrowser. PSCS2 also show the RAW file correctly. I wonder what wrong with my ZoomBrowser :(

I think your problem is that you're trying to use the Canon software, which to me seems pretty crappy. Just use CS2 and ignore the Canon software, and your life will be much simpler.

The ZoomBrowser show the RAW files smaller than the actual dimensions. If I select a thumbnail in ZoomBrowser and hit the "properties" button, I get the correct dimensions (pixel count). What dimensions are you getting?

The ZoomBrowser show the RAW files smaller than the actual dimensions.
Start by telling us what kind of camera you are using. Tell us what exposure modes you use.
Tell us exactly what numbers you mean by "smaller" than actual. Do you mean dimensions in pixels, or inches, or resolution in DPI, or what?
Also, RAW files use a non-lossy compression. JPEG uses a lossy compression, but it varies.

Strange, perhaps, but working correctly, I think.
What you are looking at in ZoomBrowser is the embedded jpeg, NOT the RAW file. If you change the size of the embedded jpeg to "large" then it will show at the same size as the RAW file - but take up more space on your CF card.
DPP looks directly at the RAW file, obviously, and thus shows the size of that.

That might be it. I will try changing the setting tonight.
Oh, it is my fiance camera and it is Rebel XT.

MM Pheewww...... that scared me in the beginning. I just started shooting RAW and have been using DPP for a week but didn't notice the difference. I hardly use ZoomBrowser eventho i have installed it.

Ok, now this is very strange. I tried shooting RAW file (and not RAW+JPG) from her camera. The DPP and PSCS2 show the dimension correctly. I use PSCS2 myself but my fiance like the Zoombrowser just for viewing the pictures.
To clarify, when I say dimension, I don't mean reported dimension (i.e., 3456 x 2304 in the properties window). I meant the actual dimension of the picture that show up when double click the RAW image to view full screen. You can try zoom in to 100% and you will see that the actual image show is smaller than the 100% JPG. Very strange.
It is very easy to see this strange effect actually. Try this.
1) Open Zoombrowser. Right-click on a RAW file, select properties to confirm the size of the file (should be 3456 x 2304). Close the properties window.
2) Double-click on the RAW image. This will show a full screen version.
3) Zoom to 100% and compare the size (as you see on your screen) to a converted JPG one.

The answer is quite simple. In every RAW file there is an embedded JPG. This is what the camera uses to show you the review image on the lcd. This has to be like this because a RAW is not really a picture file and therefore cannot be directly viewed. ZB also utilizes this JPG in order to show you a preview, again for the same reason. The size of the embedded JPG in 350 XT RAW is 1024x1536.
