Hey guys and gals,

Christmas is almost here and my girlfriend has wanted a new pocket size point and shoot camera for the longest. She currently has a 5megapixel power shot that takes ok pictures but she needs an upgrade. I want to get the the best bang for the buck only real thing that matters besides it being a really really great point and shoot camera is it has to be black well she would love it if it was but if it truly is an amazing camera then I'm sure her and I can look past the color. She likes to shoot lots of family portraits day and night. Any suggestions on what camera to go with?

Thank you for your help and time

Do you have a price limit? If not, I'd first suggest the S90, which has a fast (at its widest zoom setting anyhow) f/2.0 lens for those portraits. Alternatively a (bigger and bulkier, but taking an external flash for when it's really dark) G11, SX1 or SX20. All are so close to black as never mind. If she wants something small and simple, look at the SD990. Again, it comes in black.

Sounds like you're describing Canon's newest pocketable hotshot wonder, the S90.

Wow S90 looks good, Price isn't that bad considering my wish list but, what would be the next best thing?

Depending on her interest in controls either the SX200 or SD990; after that, the SX120 probably. The SD990's smallest of the bunch.

Something to keep in mind. The smaller the camera the less powerful the flash, usually. For example, the flash on the SD990 is not as powerful as the flash on the S90 (which looks like your best bet here).

I just bought an S90 for my wife, for Christmas. I know she's going to love it.
