This is made with 18-55 kit lens and reversed 50f1.8 taped in front. DOF is shallow (can you imagine DOF with wider apertures). That yellow point is ~1mm in diameter.
Is it too soft?

Not bad - i'd like to see a bit more color, or something a bit larger to draw the eye - but that's just me.

I love this image. The limited zone of focus, the composition with the stamen running diagonally through the picture, the soft green in the background. It all works for me. Good job.

Interesting shot! I'd have liked to see the yellow bits more in focus as that's where my eye is drawn first. That would also have made the upsweeping part of the stamen? sharper too, which would tend to lead my eye back into the pic.

Thanks, I agree the focus point is slightly behind the yellow tip. But this was verrry small flower and DOF is very shallow, but that is no excuse. Practice makes perfection :-). just have to shoot and shoot...
