View Full Version : This place needs some paintball! The ugliest day to shoot in SoCal!

So the annual Toys 4 Tots event came around again. This reminds me that another year of paintball has passed here in So Cal. It just so happened that it was another ugly day to shoot. Here are my favorites from the event:

1. So over the top... but I love it. The ref (volunteer) was trying to do anything to get us to shoot him all day. Once I captured this one I knew that I was going to edit it like this:

Thanks guys. Although processed quite a bit (sorry to break it to some of you... but the ref couldn't make fire-balls) this is one of my favorites from the year. It just makes no-sense but catches your attention. :)

I really the comments. My goal this year has been to try and push myself and other paintball photographers to do different things at events. It is a sport that can become VERY redundant. Especially when you have 10 photogs on the "snake-side" all shooting the same bunkering move. you all get the same shot from a "slightly" different perspective. If you want something different: MOVE. Shoot from that place you'll likely get shot at and that most won't want to photo-from.

www.thephotomob.com is a group of photographers, mainly from the sport of paintball, that have been pushing to improve/expand/create the way this sport is shot! That's how we ended up setting up a "photo-booth" at events. Where players can get their portrait taken between games!

I can't wait for the 2010' season! We'll see you out there!

lol... that's my boy there. He's not playing on at that point. When the ref didn't check him and he wiped it clean with his tank, that's another story! It's paintball though, you're only hit when a ref sees the hit.

I love the finished product on all your shots, great processing

Thanks!

Hey Rob, great work!
Thanks Mike. We need to see more of your stuff on here!

Amazing stuff Rob, after all the years I photographed you as a player I never realized you also had this much talent as a photographer. I think you have found your place in the sport much as I have

I am really impressed with your work considering that you are relatively new at paintball photography. I think all the years you played gave you an understanding of the game that has helped you excel as a photographer.

Now you only need to start shooting scenario events to see how hard paintball photography can be

See you on the sidelines my friend :)

Probably the biggest compliment I've ever been given! Now let's clear some room on the pages of the magazines for some of my photos Lord V! lol.

But seriously, to have the recognition of someone who I've respected forever and who's done this more than anyone, that kind of legitimizes my efforts. I know that I'll be back next season and I can't wait for it, and yes Gary I'll shoot some scenario! I have no excuse to miss the UWL at SC in Jan. It's like 5 minutes from my house! lol.

The quality of your work legitimizes your efforts...

I will be at the UWL for Jungle Magazine so I will see you there. Since this is scenario paintball and there are no sidelines you will be among the players so I recommend you wear something bright so you will not get shot too much.

You will be surprised how few photographers will be at this event and there are no side lines full of point and shoot running man photographers getting in your way

1 and 3 are awesome (obviously a bit of PP work done to them though)

I wonder how something like #8 would look if you did a selective colouring on just the paintballs spilling out of the hopper

or someone getting hit, with just the splatter in colour.

Not a whole lot done in photo 3... but photo 1 isn't PP at all! ;)

As for selective coloring... I just find selective coloring to be a bore most of the time. It rarely impresses me in sports. Just my opinion. I think that I've seen it done poorly more than I've seen it done well. It always borders on the "cheesy" side. So I tend to stay away from it.

It also might be because I tried to do it all the time when I first started to shoot, ex:

It isn't professional until you add an 8-stop vignette in post.
