Was told on the news today, about a rare occurrence of Jupiter passing behind the moon. Apparently it's not due to be visible here again for about 70 years.

Of course, I was there to photograph it.

A rare BLUE MOON. :p

And a slightly larger image: (Click)

There's been no cheating in these images, such as double exposures or brightening Jupiter. They are as is. Just a overall level change slightly, and a bit of USM.

I've also put together a few recent shots in the past 3 days to:

Great shots. Looked out earlier and noticed Jupiter and the Moon close together. Didn't realise that the moon had passed in front though. Glad you caught it. !

Forgot to ask...were these with the 400mm ? or the scope ?.

Wazza

Scope. These are mostly resizes rather than crops. :D

Wow, cool shots. I stood for a second on my doorstep and looked up. my 300mm wont get me that close :(

Would you post a pic of your scope setup?

In other news, im off to piha tomorrow to have a gander. Hopefully i can have my try at some surfie shots.

Oh wow! nice series Wazza!
Mark your calendar for the next occurance. Hyper-tele lens should be cheaper then.

Cool, didn't even know that happened. I'm also interested in the scope setup with the camera.

Thanks, but it only happened in certain parts of the world. Such as North of Brisbane, and it lasted from 6:20 till about 7:30.

In 70 years, I would say the atmosphere would be too polluted, and would have to take shots from space.

Very impressive set-up on the scope. oh, and the photos are fantastic.

Wazza, is that a piggyback mounting on top of that scope?. Put the wide angle on it and get a full sku 'milky way' photo. Or is Auckland too light polluted for long exposures ?.

sweet shot! It is now my new desktop background. I really want to get into astrophotography, but cannot afford the telescope setup (says the man who just bought a 300mm f4 - sigh).

Thanks again.

As to the piggyback. That's just the little viewfinder. It's probably got some field of view as my 300mm.
So it would be much easier just to use one of my own lens. Also, there is no specific mount or tightening mechanism.

I forgot to mention, I tried the 0.6x converter for giving a wider view, and now will just fit the moon in, with a 1500mm focal length + 20D sensor crop.

I wasn't referring to the finderscope. The thing beside it that looks like a tripod mount - looks like one of these

You attach the camera and use the scopes tracking motor for long exposures, and you can get good 'milky way' photod with lots of stars etc.

Great stuff, Wazza. Astronomy and photography both fascinate me. I got all excited about the transit of Venus last year - most of my friends just stared at me blankly.

Oh yeah, sorry, wasn't thinking about that.

WOW!! #5 is my favorite!!! so sharp! and with only the finder scope!!

Wazza
25th of December 2005 (Sun), 06:10
Thanks, but it's on the full scope, not the finder only. Would be nice to get that much detail off such a small lens though. :)

To fill the moon up, with a full size image like I have, you really need 2000+mm in total.
Makes a difference to my 400mm, where if I crop a full size shot to the moon only, the image is only 800/900 pixels, whereas I'm beyond full frame on the standard view, and to fit the moon in, need the 0.6x adapter to widen it up.

Well done Wazza, is there a web page that would tell you which stars are which above you?

Cheers,

There should be plenty on google, by searching "Star Chart" or Map.

I'm not sure exactly which ones are best, but my grandad who is really into it, has Star Charts, and programs and trackers on the computer. I need to try and learn as much as I can over the coming few years...

Thanks

Very impressive wazza, what kind of gear are you using?

Wazza
29th of December 2005 (Thu), 23:22
That was a 20D, and the gear listed in sig, ;), Meade LX200 10" telescope.

I'm hoping to get some more later in summer. Maybe a bit too warm, but still wanting to do some more shots.
