New to strobes

Hello-
I just started using strobe lights from hot lights and i was wondering, is there any schooled thought on how far away from the subeject (im shooting people) the strobes should be?
The space im using is pretty small- 10x10
And the photos are coming our pretty washed out.
Unlike when i was using the hot lights i was able to get really beautiful saturated colors.

Any thoughts?

If your shots are washed out then they are overexposed. Are you using a flash meter?
You can reduce the intensity of the light by moving the light further away from the subject, by using a diffusion panel or an umbrella, and by dialing down the power.
