OK...share a picture, share a thought, share your new gear or even your classics...seek advice or feel free to offer some...not a competition...not a test...you don't need an L....but don't be a pest....check your attitude and ego at the door!:p If your here for fun...come on in....if you're here to stir up trouble, go darken another door. Can't get much simpler than that.;)

Clearly so :) You have many deer where you are?

We just have pesky raccoons! They are pretty much in the pest category. There use to be quite a few before the suburbs moved in. It was not unusual to wake up some fall mornings to see deer out the kitchen window. Now they are mostly in the preserves and parks.

gmooooooooooooo.

Nice new thread title Chris!

I like the deer photos JJ. They were more plentiful on the Oregon coastal region when I grew up than they are now too. For awhile we had a problem with poachers who would shoot one at night in our pastures.... among the cows. During that period of time, when we heard cars stopping at night near the farm we would drive along the road bordering the fields with a spotlight, looking for poachers. At the same time, we counted the deer that came down from the hills to eat the grass. Many nights we counted over a hundred deer. Today I'd be surprised if you could find 20 deer living in the same area.

Cloudy winter days in Oregon = horrible light, and I can't afford the right kind of gear for wildlife photography, but I still enjoy it. Here's a shot from a couple weeks ago when T.D. and I were at Ridgefield. The heron was really upset with the two otter that came by and took the fish. Shooting through a bunch of tall grass didn't help the photo either, but it's a lot of fun to see this kind of stuff happening, and even poor quality photos help preserve the memory.

#1 was a 100-400 and #2 was a 300 f/2.8.

#1 was in the wild ('bout a 33% crop) and #2 was a wildlife park resident (Don't know if it was captive but it didn't mind people so much.)

WooHoo Everyone! Haven't checked in since this morning, and already a new thread with 5 pages!

Let's see, people were posting critters earlier...back in Spring of '07 I paid a visit to a little local wetlands that I dubbed "Critter Lake" because, well, it was full of critters. Here is where I had may first "close" encounter with a GBH -- close enough, that is, that I could photograph it and come out with a crop that would still have some detail, and here is where my "affair" with this bird began.

I took this shot with my 30D and the consumer 70-300 IS lens, and from this sprang expensive new lenses and, before too long the 1D3:

They kept trying to say she is a couple of years old...looking in her mouth and other things tells me she is no more than 8 months. They named her Zelda, but I am not sure and she isn't either...I think we will work on finding the right name in the next couple of days.

She is extremely malnourished....but she joined right in with the others and ate a big supper...poor thing ate enough that you could actually see her belly swell. I suspect with proper diet and some TLC....she might be a big girl....she is already the biggest dog in the house....hehehe

Afternoon all, and just checking out the new digs!

Where are all the decorations? So far only a penguin and a cat?

Awww, I'm so glad Wool. She's really pretty! Shepard mix?

Some of these are pretty wonky though because John allowed me to try out his 14mm fisheye. Boy was THAT whacky when the shortest you've ever used was 24mm. LOL!

Let me see if I can explain some common uses of 1st and 2nd curtain sync. Generally 2nd curtain sync is done in conjunction with a fairly long shutter time....to show a form of motion...you can also do the same with 1st curtain...but the results are dramatically different.

Just for purposes of this...picture in your mind a car driving across your line of sight from left to right.
In the case of 1st curtain sync w/a prolonged shutter....you will see a crisp car on the left side of the image....trailing to a blur on the right side of the print.

In the case of 2nd curtain sync w/a prolonged shutter....you will see a blurred streak to the left of the image trailing to a crisp car on the right side of the print.

Hope this makes sense....I would go snap some test shots to show you...but I have a new pup to deal with.

Cute dog. It makes me mad when I hear about dogs being mistreated. Seriously a lot of people should never be allowed to keep any kind of animals. It didn't use to be like this in Denmark but unfortunately more and more people mistreat their pets. A couple years ago some kids pour gasoline on a rabbit and set it on fire and they recorded it on video with their cell phone. Absolutely insane and they should have that done to themself.

Interesting ??? for you folks. Recently they introduced state wide laws that all cats must be registered. Local Councils collect the fees and monitor this. There is nothing like that in Denmark. I would not have a problem with something like this if it can help prevent mistreatment of pets. There is some dicsusion in Denmark about banning the dog breeds that often are called muscle dogs

There are many places in the US that have adopted or are considering adoption of cat registrations. Feral cats are becoming a major problem in several urban areas. The region around Orlando is having a real struggle with them.

Can't see myself taking the laptop into the field to try it but I might set up a table top rig tomorrow and shoot a few still life shots. Maybe some used and unused matches.

There's also a bit about using it for lens calibration. Have to read up on that and see what it's about.

And there's a very not so special place for people who would harm an animal...!I sure hope that's true because I know the place here is not so bad. Last year I witnessed a guy purposely swerve into the oncoming lane (there were no oncoming cars) to hit a dog. I got his license and stopped. The dogs owner also saw the whole thing. She was on her front steps calling the dog back home. It had escaped. The police caught the guy, he had a court date, he was let off, I don't know why.
