which crop looks better?

I like the landscape because it is more "up close and personal". it makes me feel like I am right there with him. but it also make me think "where is he at?" "where is the water coming from?" etc.

The portrait crop seems to tell the whole story a little better, but seems like it is missing something that the landscape crop has.

I prefer the landscape version. Something just seems unbalanced in the portrait version.

I vote for landscape. The portrait version gives a lot of distracting dead space in the upper left hand corner. Takes my attention from the cute face.

Portrait for me....you can see where the water is coming from. Shame you chopped his bottom off though! Lovely shot by the way.

I too think the Landscape is less distracting and brings my attention immediately to the subject. Great shot, but the portrait just makes my eyes wander all over the photo.

portrait. i like to keep all limbs on younger subjects. they grow so quickly and so do those limbs :)

his determination is to be highly commended. :D

yeah, that kinda bothered me, too. but his Mama was hovering just inches away and I was trying to keep her hand and skirt out of the shot. and I have yet to master the fine art of the cloning/healing tools in PS.

original shot attached if anyone wants to have a go at cloning/cropping to make it better.

thanks for the feedback, everyone :)

somehow the two guys in the background bother me. specifically, the guy on the left. he's right there above the baby's head. if they can be framed more to the right, especially in your cropped landscape version, that would add good balance to the entire frame. it would also add a subtle, not-so-distracting message of their watching the baby in play.

just my $0.02.

Portrait works good. But you may try to blur the guys behind him.

I like the landscape version personally, since the subjects pose is more of a landscape form. The portrait didn't seem to frame the subject appropriately. As far as telling the whole story, if you move the center of your landscape crop down a bit the story can be told. Below is my quick go at it. I cloned out the person on the right side of the pic.

I really like the landscape version much more ... brings the action right to the fore ... body and the arm as well as the direction of the baby's gaze brings it all together to the action happening at the wrist.

great shot!
