is there anything I can buy and mount on the hotshoe that will help me autofocus ?

This may seem ghetto but I just use a flash light. It works pretty well.

any of canon's current ETTL flashes or the ST-E2 will do the trick, or some third party flashes, though which of those will do the job im not entirely sure.

yeah I know but if I wanted something small and slick ...
don't want to carry a flash with me !

You could do that and put a tape switch on the grip area...

That would be nice if you're not a shooting a person as your subject. I don't think i'd want a laser pointer aimed at my eye. :)

Try those clip-on LED lights. The kind that clips on your cap's bill.
Not too overpowering and they just might work for your purpose.

I often use the ST-E2 just for that

When shooting basketball and volleyball in gyms I would use the ST-E2. Worked a charm.
