hello, I have very little knowledge about external hard drives and back up. I have just purchased a western digital 1TB EX HD and am wondering if there is a direct way I can transfer the files straight from my friends EX HD to mine without having to first load them throguh the computer??

Well, you don't have to load them onto the computer's hard drive, but you will need to connect both external drives to the computer (or to two computers on the same network) to manage this.

you can hook them both to the computer and using the computer to issue commands to transfer the data between the 2 devices without first loading the data to your computer.

I use a lightweight program called Karen's replicator that is small and fast and very configurable. I think the name of the site is called Karens Powertools. Will move files from anywhere to anywhere, drive to drive, network to drive, and vice-versa. It's really easy to use, in fact I use it to dump my CF and SD cards directly to my Buffalo Drivestation where I later cull and sort them.

As far as I know, there is no way to do it without connecting them through a computer, but if you mean can it be done without transferring the files to the computer and then again to the other drive, yes you can.
Just plug both drives into the computer, open both in 'my computer' and drag and drop from one to the other. It will then copy them direct to the second external drive.
