Both the man n the right and the mother/daughter combo on the left make nice shots, but I don't think they belong in the same photo. I would try splittling in the middle. With the man on the right, you might try isolating him and blurring the background.

the photograph is perfect as is.

how wonderful it is to see people from different worlds smile at the same thing (you with a camera). the other people on the bus are too wrapped up in their own world and too busy to take notice of the delicate and passing moment-sort of like the bus ride itself, once you get off the moment is over. the dreary fogginess outside in contrast to the bright orange color of the seats adds to the cheerfulness of what's going on inside the bus.

notice too how the subjects are committed to the items at hand...the man to his back pack, the women to her purse but more importantly to the young girl, the young girl to her doll.

if i could encounter such pleasant smiles on the bus i too would ride this bus everyday!

wonderful capture!!!

i like tuna...on wheat ;)

As a person living in the DC metro area, I'd like to put in my two cents.

This is a *hard* shot to get. I ride the metro very frequently and no one ever smiles on it. Everyone is always in their own world and trying as hard as possible to ignore everyone in their presence. So, nice job on capturing a very rare moment on the metro. I think my point is almost proven by how oblivious everyone else is around the 3 smiling faces.

Now, onto the critique. I like the photo as is, but I think it would also benefit to split the image as juneappal stated. Although, it may take away from the overall feel of the original picture, I think it would be interesting to see the cropped image.

June, exposing and Mal - thank you for your comments and critique.

I've considered the suggestion to split the image in half and make two seperate images. What I arrive at is the left side would be two people giving the standard "smile-at-the-camera" pose - a relatively uninteresting (to me) shot. The right side might hold it's own interest but, in my opinion, holds much more impact when we see it's strangeness next to the familiar "smiles".

Others may agree with the splitting up of the images?

Tuna: I still stand by you to keep it as is. Though I can see what others are saying about cropping I still think alot is going to be lost.

I've seen your other work and now remember your "Americana" counter image which I was very much attracted to. I'm curious, are you cropping through the viewfinder or on software?

I'm happy you remembered "Americana" - others have liked that image as well. I enjoy capturing the moment and often leave some room to play - so, compositionally, in-camera but I do cropping later as needed.

Thank you for your comments.
