It looks like a male Pileated Woodpecker, Dryocopus pileatus, which is common to Yosemite. Where in the park did you see him?

I took him in a meadow across from Bridal Veil Falls, I heard several of them drumming while I hiked up the trail at Mariposa Grove. There were also red-bellied and white-headed as well in the area I presume because some of the Poderosa Pines were injured due to the fires last year.

Great shot of a very hard bird to get a decent pic of I have followed more than one through the woods and all I got for my troubles were partial shots and blurs and oh yeah lots of mosquito bites, good for you

Yes, I know that meadow well. I will look some more when I am up there in a couple of weeks.

Also go up to Mariposa Grove, I heard several of them up the hill towards the so called museum.

Yes, I can imagine that to be a good place for them. Alas, I will not be in the south end of the park. My little wildlife photography expedition will keep me mostly in the Sugarpine forest closer to the north rim of the valley.
