While I was waiting for the GBH I was watching to actually do something interesting I thought that I would take a crack at the terns that were feeding nearby. These were the most acceptable of the many that I took. All with the 1DMKII and the 300 with 1.4tc

Sheldon:
You give me courage to try some bird shots myself.

I think I'll start practicing by throwing a frozen chicken in the air. I'll work my way up to live birds from there.

BTW, those are some nice shots. The 300 with the 1.4X TC really is a nice package.

The really nice thing about that combination is that it is still handholdable (as long as you have strong shoulders). The lens is so bloody sharp that you can crop fairly significantly and still have a very acceptable shot.

Watch out for those frozen birds. You do know that once you throw them they do have to come down....eventually.:D

These are good!

I spent some time shooting Terns a few weeks ago - wow, what a pain for exposure and getting motion sickness from trying to track them. Out of all the pics (flight & sitting still) only a couple had catch-lights in the eye. Did you find that too, when you looked at your shots? Or did my birds have a hang-over or something?

Or you could have someone else toss them for you:

Call me when you start tossing chickens..

I think that may be illegal in most states, the deep south excluded of course. :D

Fabulous pictures, done to a tern...

Nice shots, and nice bokeh. You must have been fairly close to them to get like that.

Let me get the deep fryer set up first. No sence in letting good chicken go to waste:):)

Nice shots, Sheldon. That 300 f/2.8 sure is looking more and more tempting, especially when used with the 1.4x TC. :)

Tom, if you get a long flexible pole, skewer the frozen chicken (after it's been thawed for a more natural look) to one end and then stick the pole into the ground, you can get the pole swinging from side to side a couple of time. This will give you more opportunities to practice you bird-in-flight shots. Once you master that, you can then have the pole swinging for and aft to practice the more difficult and challenging bird-in-flight-attacking-you shot which Ian has mastered so well as evidenced by his GGO shots last winter. ;)

Good idea.

I'm on that right now.

Excellent shots Sheldon! I've taken a few shots at terns and they do move like crazy, especially the small ones. Great work.
