Can I get some opinions on this shot? I'm not really sure how I feel about it.

Thanks,
Jeff

Ok, just add a bit more green and you have a "dawn of the dead" portrait. The kid looks like a plastic doll

Is that human? LOL

This has got to be the most insensitive post here ever. Comment on the picture, not insult the subject.

Errr... subject is part of the picture. It's a cute kid, it's just the positioning and symmetry gave off that impression.

How is that insulting? jeez

Well, aside from DocFranekstein not realizing that his words *are* insulting and not constructive commentary, here is my opinion on the post:

The background is over exposed. I'd add more contrast, deepen the shadows, and crop off the empty area on the sides and top to make it a tighter composition. Maybe add a slight amount more saturation as well. Aside from that, those eyes are amazing. Careful with the contrast and shadows, it may take away from the eyes.

Now you're backpedalling, but not quite., You call the kid a plastic doll, a shade away from being the dawn of the dead, and question if it is human, and you think it's not insulting? and you punctuate it with LOL? Looks like some pretty sharp barbs you threw back there.

Besides, what's up with your sig? "Interpretation of the world through artistic onanism"? I'm pretty certain there's a rule against posting lewd words here: onanism = masturbation. I'm not sure what you mean by that but it sounds inappropriate as a sig if you ask me.

Anyway, back to the pic, I agree with Mal, it does need a bit of adjustment with levels, some cropping and saturation. It would be a good idea to select those eyes in another layer and oversharpen it a bit to make it stand out.

If it were my shot, I'd wonder what I was thinking when I took it? I'd just try to do better next time. ;-)

Doc was out of order and I think he knows it.
As far as his sig is concerned onanism can mean masturbation or coitus interuptus depending on your interpretation of the Bible ( Genesis 38-9).
I don't find his sig offensive, indeed I'm intrigued.

"Interpretation of the world through artistic onanism".

What the hell does that mean Doc. :?

As to the photo, I'd agree the background is way too bright and some contrast could be added to the main subjects.. Some colour balance is also needed. The focus appears to be on the dad and not the kid although a little USM would rectify that.

I think the eyes are amazing and it draws the viewer to the shot.
I think she is beautiful and I'm sure you are a very proud dad.

:D:D:D

That actually makes more sense to me than the literal translation.

No doubt the Doc will enlighten us.

For me the expressions on both faces don't quite work. I could be misreading it, but the man looks like he's tollerating the picture, and the baby is non-committal, not quite curious, not quite amused, not quite anything definite. With some more engaging expressions I would find the picture quite charming, but I'm a sucker for any pictures with children.

As much as I would hate to get lumped in with DocFrankenstein on this, I think the color is way off on the child, less so on the father. (Unless she is sick, and her skin really is that jaundiced, in which case I'm sorry and I hope she gets better soon.)

Increasing the saturation without first fixing the color would make it a lot worse, I think. If you have photoshop, maybe a photo filter would do the trick. And a quick curves adjustement to increase the contrast and give it a bit more punch would be good.

Otherwise it looks good. There is definitely plenty of raw material to work with there.

Yeah, the color and contrast are off but it is a cute photo. This is the way I would salvage it.......

Yeah, that should be a pretty easy pose to recreate. :D

I was wondering if maybe part of the problem with the color is a mix of natural light, indoor lighting, and/or a flash. In that kind of situation is hard or impossible to pick a good white balance to make the whole image come out looking right. In my experience it took a lot more post processing to get things working. That's when I really learned to use layer masks in Photoshop.

Good luck with it.

that's a beautiful baby and look at the proud face on that (i'm guessing) father. well whoever he is, he looks very proud holding that gorgeous baby.

i detect a green on the baby's skin tone though the skin tone on the man looks fine to me but my monitor could be off.

This is what the photo reminds me of:
http://www.cleaford.co.uk/oldfull.jpg

I actually wasn't sure if it a real baby... not because there's something wrong with the subject, but because of the colors and the way it's photographed.

Now, all those who beleive the only comment to a photograph containing a baby should be the kneejerk "oh, cute, nice wow" I have to disagree. There are more than one way to portray something and this is the reaction the photograph has caused.

As to my sig...

It's a short little phrase to try and express my relationship with the camera. Since I take pictures for fun only, nothing productive ever comes out of it. Yet, I still do it, discovering that even the shots I took which seemed to be original at the moment have been done thousands of times before.

And I'm not alone

Still, your comments are way out of line. You could have worded it better. How would you feel if you were the recipient of those kind of comments? You talk as if you're deeply knowledgeable about photography, yet the few photos that you post do not reflect that at all.

Ouch, now I'm hurt.

You've blown my cover. I know nothing about photography. Bravo!
