I am really new to photography. For christmas I got a Canon 300D and have been playing around with it a little. This shot is from my first set of shots. I don't have any particular settings and just a little 75watt light bulb for lighting. I am going to play around some more and maybe get a better lens. Any suggestions are appreciated!

What a sweetie! Congratulations on the new addition and welcome to POTN.

I would add more lighting as this shot looks like th ebottom part of the photo was cut off as the strong black foreground looks more like a mask than part of the actual pic.

Keep shooting and posting!

Congratulations! And welcome to the forums.

Babies are great subjects. I didn't know how hard new borns were to photograph until I realized they can't hold themselves up..... This complicates the posing which I suspect is the reason for the black mask in the forground. I wouldn't try to hide the foreground but find a pose that needs no support. Keep shooting. I kind of like the lighting. Perhaps an upgrade to a 100W or 150W would help. I'm finding the true value of good lighting and just bought a 550EX rather than that nifty-fifty I've been wanting.

congratulations , the baby is beautiful

why not try taking shots in natural light , maybe near a window
the light on the baby's face and back is a bit harsh
the natural (diffused) light coming from a window will maybe give a soft glow
and that lens should do
;)

Thanks for the information. I'm glad to be a part of this forum so my talents can grow.

I'll try the natural light idea next.
