Cool candid, but the tint used for edit isn't working for me?

Wow, I find that very interesting. In the OOC version, I found the colors to be very meh. But I really liked the composition - especially the triangle between the left hand, down the strings to the right hand, to the eyes, and the eyes very purposefully looking back at the left hand.

But then the colors - especially that blaaah blue of the capo. To me this shot demanded a mono conversion.

Included is the original - please feel free to tinker, I would welcome a fresh set of eyes.

I think you were on the right track with b&w, just not the conversion you posted. The color is a very so so shot. Try again!

Here's a little softer version. I neglected to mention I really like this photo and composition.

As did I - great image. To comment on the previous comment ("not very sharp"), sharpness isn't the end-all of photography. This image conveys feeling, which is far more important than technical minutiae.

I disagree.

This lends itself well to getting in close and personal. It's an interesting shot.

NavyDoc that conversion looks like a frosh's pencil drawing. I like it. Flo, your muted one is nice too. Lots of potential for this one, getting hard to pick a fave!!!

Navydoc,

Normally, I don't care for tonemap shots, but I have to admit that your edits work quite nicely with the subject. In fact, for some reason, when I looked at the first one what went through my mind was "Aqualung, my friend - don't you start away uneasy - you poor old sod, you see, it's only me."

So, well done, and I was wondering what software did you use to create that? I DLed the test version of Photomatix but haven't had a chance to look it over yet. If it was Photomatix, what settings did you use?

Thanks,

Rad

I love the composition thats for sure. Not thrilled with the orginal edit. Maybe it's because of the noise?

But still a great shot!

Thanks, but it's not sensor noise. Hard to tell in this minifed version, but that is actual film grain. ASA 400, to be exact. Here is the link. (http://www.prime-junta.net/pont/How_to/n_Digital_BW/a_Digital_Black_and_White.html?page=5) I deliberatly put it there, as I was after a grainy, "street shooting", sort of feel.

And thank you.

Radtech1 and all, thanks for the kind words on my edits.

When I first saw your photo, I loved the intensity and emotion he is putting into his music. I thought if more detail could be added, it would add character and compliment that.

I used Topaz adjust using one of the presets. I don't recall but I think it was "detail". In CS3, I may have done some slight tweaks with levels. For the second edit, I used Neat Image to smooth out the first edit. On a smaller photo like this, sometimes Neat Image adds too much reduction but in this case, I thought it gave the photo a nice illustration look. I believe I added some sharpness back using smart sharpen.

I'm new to all this myself so I'm learning by practicing on mine and others photos.
