G11 will offer better high ISO performance for low light situations, better dynamic range control, and it has the swivel screen if that matters to you. The G9 lens has a little longer reach than the G11 but not quite as wide. If your on a budget and shoot mostly in well lit environments then I would go for the G9.

Up until a couple of days ago, I was asking myself the same question. The G11 that I ordered a couple of days ago is supposed to get here today. I went with the more expensive G11 for the following reasons--
--Better performance at higher ISOs means more versatility in the types of situations that I can shoot in and get good results.
--I really like the idea of that flip-out LCD, which will be great for up high or down low situations; I wish my 40D had one of these. :)
--I like the idea of the separate exposure compensation dial--another thing I wish my 40D had. :)
I can't wait for it to get here. :D

Which do you reccomend? Based on what?
10meg said it mostly, as far as some key differences in the two generations. But there are a few other feature differences.
Just buy the G11 and enjoy the comfort of some warranty coverage.

I just sold a G9 and bought a new G11. Although I have not mastered it yet, I do like it better and glad I made the switch. Go with the G11!!!

G-11 handles noise out of the camera better than the G9 does. However if you have Noise Ninja you can get the profile for the G9 and clean it up a bit.
G-11 has a swivel screen...why the hell Canon ever removed that feature stumps me. Just like why the hell they removed RAW from the G-7.
However no combo of adapters + lenses will ever get the G11 to reach as far as the G-9 native and no where close the far end of the G-9 with adapters + lenses.
And you can get as wide as the G-11 with it's native lens range...with the G-9 plus adapter+lenses.
So depends on what you like to shoot:
1) do you shoot in tight rooms or situations where you cannot back up and you don't care about stuff far away or don't want to use your zoom legs to get the far, far shot or it's too dangerous (ie tigers) and you hate doing post processing work? ...get the G-11
2) you like to do macro work ...that swivel screen is way handy...get the G-11
3) you need the reach (even if you don't want to get an adapter and extra lenses) and don't mind doing post work...get the G-9

This is a money driven decision. If you have the bucks to go with a G11 then I think it's a slam-dunk. I wouldn't even hesitate. If you are looking to get into a G series camera but have budget constraints then a used G9 does the trick.
I just bought my G11. It's simply fabulous. I love it!

I can't make a comparison because I never had the earlier model but I LOVE my G11. Not been out my hand - (well briefly then) since I got it.

I had both for a couple of months and the G11 outperformed the G9 for what I used it for. Wider angle lens, articulated screen, better in-camera noise reduction and just a better feel in my hands. I haven't missed the extra reach as yet. My brother also has a G9, which he considered the best P&S he's ever had. Used my G11 on vacation and now plans to move up when the prices come down a bit.
