What would be the best CF card for those cameras?

I'm using 8 GB Extreme IVs. Couple of hundred RAW per card and fast enough to clear the buffer reasonably well.

I use the 8GB Extreme IV in my 7D as well. They are 45MB/s cards and I have had no issues using it in either the 8fps mode or for recording 1080p video. I almost always shoot in mRAW but honestly never take enough shots in a row to fill the buffer up completely so that I have to wait for it to clear. The Extreme IV has recently been replaced with the new Extreme and Extreme Pro which are 60MB/s and 90 MB/s respectively. Unless you are taking so many shots in RAW as to fill up the buffer or several hundred jpegs you probably are not going to notice a significant difference with the new cards. As for video the camera's file system limits any video clip to 4GB so as long as the card you are using can keep up with your selected resolution I don't see the faster cards gaining you much there. I'm sure there are some other technical improvements with the new cards but I'm not up to speed on what they are. For now I am going to continue using what I have.

5D mark 1 or 2? Big difference because the 2 is UDMA capable therefore takes advantage of Extreme IVs. Therefore on the 5D classic, you will not gain any speed performance beyond Extreme III.
Now the 5D mark 2 and 7D takes advantage of UDMA cards so it's best to get Extreme IV or Pro but expect to pay an arm and a leg. As for me, I found the PNY UDMA CF cards are the best bang for the buck. It was tested to be neck and neck with Extreme IV.

I use SanDisk 8Gb Extreme III. They work great with photos, but just starting shooting video and there is a problem with the Extreme IIIs that cause the camera to lock-up. I'm still looking for a replacement card, I'm thinking of trying the Lexar.

I'm thinking of trying the Lexar.
I use the Lexar Pro cards, never a problem in my MKIII or MKIIN.

I use the SanDisk Extreme (60MB/s) 16GB with my 7D - haven't had any problems.

I just found this out as well (sprang for the 3x with rebate, cheapest CF cards around after that). I read that disabling Peripheral Illumination correction fixes the freeze - I haven't had a video freeze since, but it only used to happen about 1/10 times, so... not sure if it's a conclusive fix yet. Give it a shot and see if the camera stops freezing.

I am having a really positive experience with a relatively new brand called Photofast. I shoot with a 5D Mark II. You can read about it here: http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=772918

Lexar or Sandisk. I've used Lexar for ten years without a problem.

Just to throw in another question relative to the subject. Is there a difference (What is it?) between UDMA & UDMA 6 as I see some of the Sandisk have the label UDMA, others have UDMA 6. are both compatible w/ the 7D?

UDMA and UDMA 6 are only name for speed
UDMA is certainly the UDMA 5 (i guess), working at 100mb/s and UDMA 6 is the faster one, working at 133mb/s. Of course those are theoric speed...
(UDMA 0, 1, 2, 3, 4 (16.7, 25.0, 33.3, 44.4, 66.7))
Btw the 7D is compatible with them of course, compatible with CF type I and II as well.
According to the owners manual (page 29).
I think i will personnaly take a Sandisk 16Go Extreme Pro with my 7D (will probably order my new toy the comming next week  ) , even if the non-pro one might support the 8fps. If the older card such as Extreme IV was working nicely with the 10fps of the 1D, there is no reason for the newer and faster cards to not work flawlessly. :)
first post yaaha! much thing to read on this forum

There's a 7D comparison too but I can't seem to find it.

Wow... what a surprise. The new kid on the block pretty much left the pros in the dust!

Another vote for the Sandisk Extreme IV
Except, of course, that the Extreme IV is (or soon will be) no more. Still, there are some bargains to be had as old stock is cleared.

Did you ever purchase the Sandisk Extreme Pro 16GB for your 7D? If so, do you shoot RAW? I like to shoot full-res RAW for processing later, and wonder how many shots I can get out of that specific card. I know these cameras have buffers...after you fill the buffer, how fast does it continue to shoot in burst?
Sorry for all the questions!

I recently picked up Sandisk extreme (60mb/sec) and haven't ran into any buffer issues. I shoot on raw. And hitting 8fps isn't a problem and hd video recording is perfect. Not sure about prices but Sandisk is running a rebate on their cf cards. Picked up 2x 8gb cards total $130 but you'll get $40 back in Amex prepaid card. Net $90 for 2 isn't bad I guess.

I was using Lexar 600x 16Gb UDMAs with that spiffy Firewire 800 card reader. I was very happy with them. Not only clearing the buffer but speed of emptying the card onto the computer were important for me.
But I do shoot burst a fair bit.
Then I recently started shooting almost all in RAW and was filling cards in no time. My 16Gb and 8Gb cards were no longer big enough.
Everyone here talks very highly of Transcend cards so I've got my first Transcend 400x 64Gb UDMA card and so far I’m happy with it, But then I only started using it yesterday. A lot of ‘bang for your buck’ with Transcend.
