Going on a trip soon. Was wondering if they would give me trouble for bringing a light stand and an alien bee 800? I am not checking these in, these will be in my luggage carrying on the plane. Looked around but couldn't find any solid answers.

If you can't find the answer here, try to call the airline to find out.

Airlines usually have size restriction on what you can bring on board no?

What are you carrying the light stand in? I couldn't see the AB800 being a problem in the overhead (surely it could fit in your typical "rollie" suitcase) but how small does your stand fold down to?

I'd say the lightstand restracts to about 2 feet. It'll be in a duffel bag with my clothes.

If you can toss the duffle bag in the overhead bins, I think you'll be fine. The airlines don't care what you stick in your bag :)

Maybe you can "gate check" the stand along with all the strollers on the flight! ;)

I recently flew to Austin and back, had 40D, 30D, bag of lenses, batteries, etc, and a home made monopod, and my aluminum cane in my roll around. I did not check any bags. On the way home, "the thems" removed both the cane and monopod and had about a 3 man--3 minute discussion, then asked me, and I showed them the Bogen swivel (removed for length)
He suggested "next time check with your baggage" and I gently reminded him that not all of us check anything.
I think from this trip that the public's complaints about mistreatment have been heard. I saw none of the rudeness that I've heard some about. I will say, though, that it DOES BOTHER ME that I have to give up all my rights to travel somewhere in the "free world"

I fly all the time with a monopod strapped to the side of my Think Tank roller, never had a problem. If the stand fits inside your duffel you should be OK.
