Go with the Canon 20D.

It's a higher level camera than the D70. The D70 is the entry level camera for Nikon and the Rebel is the entry level Canon.

Sigma makes lens for both mounts, but they aren't interchangable.

Same here, get the 20d. Its not about Canon bias although all things being equal between the two bodies, the Canon system would still swing it for me.
The D70s is a competitor of the 350d and both bodies have their pros and cons. The 20d is a whole different level for which Nikons D100 is a very poor competitor.

Easy decision IMHO.

I agree. 20D and D70 are not on the same level. XT and D70 are.

And the XT blows the D70 outta the water. Remember that long ago, n*kon sold canon the cmos technology and canon has run, key word run with it. Nikon is using a sony CCD in that camera. I think most would agree that canon has the edge in sensors. That is why canon rocks the digital world. I mean what else would you expect to hear from a canon forum?

Cant go wrong with the digic2 processor. 8mp vs. 6mp and the list goes on and on and ON!

All you have to do is look at how far behind nikon is in the dslr field in their bodies and the choice is clear.

You are looking for unbias opinion on the Canon Forum that is interesting!!!
Anyway, 20D:
lower noise at higher ISO
faster frame rate
better sensor
better family of people to chat with.

eventhough we here say they aren't on the same level, you'll find some reviews compare the two. the d70 or d70s now have a price advantage. Picture quality is comparable, but the nod goes to the 20D. money not being an issue, the 20D IS a better camera. Anyone that said the D70 is a better camera just couldn't afford to purchase the 20D

As others have said, 20D is in a league above the D70. If money is not an issue, then it'll be the 20D for sure. However, other considerations may play, such as connections with other photographers who may share the same 'system' of lenses for your chosen body. Remember, you are not just buying a camera, but a whole 'system'.

I am a N*kon film guy. I just recieved a D20 at my house last night (I am overseas though). Anyway what finally made me decide Canon was an article in Popular Photoagraphy. They ranked all DSLR's under $2500. EOS 20D came out on top followed by D70 and then the $2,400 Fuji. They did not test XT or D70s.

But that article was the last little bit to push me over the edge and become a dual user. As I will not give up my F100 or Nikon glass.

I bought my 20D about two months ago after several weeks of comparing specs and reviews and experiences with various cameras including Nikons. I chose the 20D for a variety of reasons, including resolution, lenses and accessories availability, features, etc.

D70 was a direct competitor to the Camera the 20D replaced.. the 10D. That comparison could be debated..

But the 10D's replacement,. the 20D has many improvements that make for a significant difference between the two widening the gap considerably. Unfortunately.. Nikon's "replacement" the D70s adds little to the current D70.. it is no longer competitive in that sense.

At the price point the 20D is the one to buy. When I was looking for a DSLR I liked the Nikon before the 350Xt and the 300D before the Nikon, mainly on feel in the hand, sample shots I'd already seen and general handling. I had no axe to grind and still don't! However, the 20D is different league to the Nikon and you will not regret buying it. Great price and performance, but shop around for price and buy from a reputable supplier. If you're in the US the DELL has a good offer at the moment.

As to lenses then Canon, Tamron, Tokina and Sigma all produce some stunning examples (and some duffers). Generally, the Canon L, Sigma EX, Tokina Pro and Tamron SP are the ones to go for. Check out fredmiranda.com for user reviews. I have found it a verfy reliable and useful information source on what to buy.

Objectively, the more I get to know DSLR the more I feel that Canon are leading edge when it comes to body system. Lenses I tend to buy whichever brand offers the best performance to value ratio. Reading this forum and gleaning advice from many of the members who have direct experience of the lenses you're interested in is a great help.

Whichever you choose, enjoy your shooting.

Not even close!!! The D70 is more of the same level as the Digital Rebel is.

Actually the D100 was the direct competitor of the 10D at the time. Oh well, Canon always comes back with something new and improved far faster than Nikon. :)

I thought the D100 was competition for the Canon D60, but because it took so long to come out they had no choice but to compare to 10D. :)

Just like the D2X came out in response to either 1Ds or 1DMkII, but by the time it was available Canon had 1DsMkII out so they tried comparing against that.

Sorry I am just choping on Noink, they make great cameras, just not as good. Although I will give them that the D70 did beat the 300D for a few months which is what it was priced closest to. And the D2X is marginally better overall then 1DM2 which came out almost a year before it. At least they are still close enough to give Canon some competition.

Hahah, very true. Totally forgot about it. The D60 was out so shortly and then the 10D came out so quickly after, that I completely forgot about the D60. The D60 is kinda like part 1 of the 10D and then it was revised. :)
