I put this bird seed stick out the back to see what it would attract. So far I have seen a few of these Doves, and 1 parrot, but ive only been able to get this shot so far. They all take off before I get the camera set up! Lol

Sandi,

Nice photo. We have those doves breeding everywhere here. They come down and eat my chook food and any bird seed that escapes the avairies. In a few months time we get very young ones walking around. With so many doves around it attracts the hawks, so hoping to get pictures when spring gets here :)

what a lovely shot
and beautiful colouring Sandi

I can't figure out the background and how the shadow is so close
also, is it a dead branch the bird seed thing is resting on ?
it's almost like a posed indoor shot

there are cooing love doves around here too but they never actually touch the other bird's food/nuts hanging up
the doves stay in the trees mostly . sometimes land on the roof next door and I can see them from the kitchen ( bungalow rooftops)

there are so many of the smaller birds around... nibbling apples pieces on the grass also.
this morning I heard the dawn chorus, out in the garden, with a cup of tea while sitting on the bench

I had to go check first to make sure I had it right but the Dove that Sandi has photographed is called a laughing (Turtle) Dove. There is another that looks nearly the same but has spots on the back of it's neck called a Spotted Turtle Dove. Both are considered pests here.

Marie, The branch is actually part of a grapevine, which dies off at this time of year and comes back in spring. It is right up against a fence, so the shadow you can see is on the fence, if that makes any sense lol.

Is it a pest witchy? Lol, and heres me thinking ive taken a shot of a beautiful coloured bird and its just a pest. lmao. A shame I didnt get a shot of the parrot, it was beautiful!

Unfortunately yes, they are a pest!..They take over native breeding places and they breed a little too well (as most pests do)..They also spread desease to our native birds. My birds got lice very bad last summer and had been in contact with NO new birds except the local doves!

The only bonus with having the doves around, is that the local hawks pick them and leave my birds alone :)

But you have taken a photo of a beautiful coloured bird. Most people consider seagulls pests and I am always photographing them. All animals are beautiful, unfortunately the introduced species do harm!..I intend to photograph the doves when they nest this year as we get heaps around here :)

Yes Sandi, it's a great photo of a lovely pest.  Much prettier than the doves we have here which are a mourning dove. Just a very plain brownish grey.

Nice shot. Almost like a painting. I agree that it is a Laughing Turtle Dove (Streptopelia senegalensis). It was introduced to the Perth area in 1898.

Actually I believe the correct term is "mourning dove". I think it's because its call sounds so sad. I'm not saying this is one though. Just that I don't think there's such a thing as "morning dove" :)
