Hey Stuman,,nice shots! How was the turnout today? I heard early on it was very light, compared to the Rossi Day at least. I wanted to go, but I really wanted to get some riding in so we went to Pala instead, which was really crowded.

Thanks BDW your shots are killer as usual.

It was very crowded at Perris. They had some kind of charity event going on and there were tons of riders. They were running groups, Minis, Novice, Expert and they had a few short fun races. We only did three motos and left. The track layout was really nice though. I haven't been there since the new owners took over and I like the new configuration, it is much easier then it used to be.

I use apple's aperture. In my post production, I focus on getting my exposure correct first and foremost. Second I adjust contrast. I have found that if I get these two max'd out perfectly then saturation and vibrancy need very minimal adjustment. Beware: I have found that different programs perform very different on the sliders.

im attending a arena cross this friday and will be shooting there. i dont know if ill be able to shoot track side or if i will be in the stands shooting. but i will be there with my 70-200 f2.8 tryin to get some shots. never been to any kind of MX, SX, AX event before so obviously ive never shot one.

Any tips on shooting indoors this kinda event. its a small tight track i heard so im guessing large groups of racers at once will be in the frame.

dont have a shoe mount so ill have to do without that. if im in the stands i hope to get some decent panning shots. aside from that i think ill be as short as i can be on the DOF to isolate the subject as much as possible. if i somehow get track side ill be pretty geeked and just gonna hope for the best. maybe ill bring the 10-22 just in case i do get close up.

Manual focus, wait for rider to start the jump, then burst every photo until he lands, holding camera very steady. Open all images, cut rider out and paste him, he should fit as if he were really in the picture a couple of times.

That's the hard way :). If you have PS CS4 open the images in Bridge and batch process the raw files in ACR to ensure consistent colour and luminance. Close the raw files and go back to Bridge. Select all the files again then go to Tools>Photoshop> Load into Photoshop Layers. When PS opens select all the layers in the Layers Palette then go to Edit>Auto Align. When that's done with all the layers still selected choose Edit>Auto blend and select Stack Images. Voila you're done :)

For best results use a tripod when taking the photos and make sure your composition encompasses the full width of the jump.

Picked up a 50d to use for family stuff mostly shooting my 1 1/2 year old daughter .. Took the 50d out to the track with a 17-40 on it just to mess around with. Was impressed with its focus accuracy and speed. Hardly touched my 1dsIII all day i was having fun with the 50d. I def need to get a grip it feels so small in my hands compared to 1d series so ordered one of those and gonna use the 50d as a w/a lens only for the track.

Great shots in this thread, My favorite sport, also was my favorite thing to do in my younger years, i raced on the weekends for 7 years when i was younger, Unfortunately cant race anymore due to a severe work related back injuries

This f-ing snow needs to go so we can get back to racing. My 70-200 needs to do some work. Not to mention its time to get dialed for the nationals. Taking pictures of passing cars to test out aperture and shutter speed is no fun but it does keep you sharp and on your toes.

yeah i even sharpened them a lot in PP and i used as fast of a shutter speed as i could raising the ISO to 400 and 800 for some. maybe just caused by the kit lens or me?

I took over 1,000 in two days. First day was mostly aperture priority (should have done shutter priority probably), second day was about half to 3/4 manual and 1/4 shutter priority.

XS is a little out of date, but it should do fine. It's you and the kit lens. Just try moving around a lot, trying different angles, I sometimes shoot over 1000 pics a day and come out with 10. Which to me is a good thing. I can't stand seeing all these "photographers" who post literally every picture they have, sharp or not. Just keep working on it, upgrade your lens FIRST when possible, then when you save up the money try going for a 1DiiN, 40D, 50D, or a 7D. You don't even want to see my first motocross shots.

McKinney will be a pro soon! The kid really flys! Try renting a 70-200 f4. I'll be in the area around April for the SX and will be out at 3palms with some buddies to shoot some photos. You can borrow mine while I'm out there if you like!

I figured it out niftyfifty. Hold still. Try to let them come into the frame. I had that problem when i first started shooting with my xti. It doesn't have the focus speed to follow that fast. It may seem like it does but trust me it doesn't. Point your camera where you want to take the picture and let them ride right into the frame.

So what would be the correct lens to shoot motocross with? make that focal length, guess that depends on your location,Out of the three lens I went with I ended up using the 17-70 the most since was basically on the track

I prefer the 70-200 on my 40D and was using my 24-70 on XT for corner shots, leaving the 580 on XT. Thinking now i'm going to buy the 10-22 and use it instead of the 24-70. I find the 24-70 to long for what i want to do in the corners. When i had my 18-55 on my XT at the track, i found i was using 18 alot. Yes I am pretty much on the track to get those.

for kris's last shot, would be nice to get the fender a little less blown out, any chance of CP in the near future? I know i struggle with my colors being screwed up on the fender/front number plate. I have a good 77mm CP and i still choose not to use it :S

Thanks guys. As for lens, the 70-200 2.8L is unbelievable. I've only been shooting for a little over a year, I've had about 6 different lenses for different cameras, and the Canon 70-200 is amazing. I would recommend everyone who shoots sports to make that their top of the list option, way above the f4 version.

PP is simple, I try to mix it up sometimes, just some minor lightroom adj, then levels and such in Photoshop.

I tried the 70-200 2.8L last weekend at the drag races and really could not deal with the weight on it lol.So for the next event I might just get a 55-250.

When this lens hits its target focused, it is amazing the shrpness and quality. But on this set of photos, I forgot to set the WB and they turned out too blue. I should have selected "CLOUDY"

Nice to see another "Prorider" on this forum. I still think you need to go get the Canon 70-200 f2.8 and shoot in AWB...your keeper rate will go way up I bet! Seeing your shots makes me wish the outdoors would get here soon!!
