Maybe he's looking for dust particles in the sensor? Hoping it'll get magnified by looking at it from the other side?

Real story a friend of mine had who got caught DUI..it's important to note he was driving his own car the the moment.

"Pardon me officer, I'll get back to you on that...but I'm a wee bit drunk at the moment and can't seem to find my car, could you let me borrow yours to drive home with?"
