Hi there
So I want a couple of flashes to operate off of tripods. I have a 7d. Now while i wash considering purchasing a couple of 580's (lots o cash !!!!) I was wondering if there would be anothe alternative....say a couple of Sunpaks? Would these operate with TTL ?
I currently have a 430.
Any input would be greatly appreciated.

welcome to POTN. I'm not certain I'm right on this, but you might need triggers if you're going the sunpak route?

I have a 580 and a 430, and another 430 I can borrow. I don't do portraits unless begged, so I rarely use a multi flash. but when I do, I set up the 430 as a 'hair' light, and handhold the 580 off camera with a cord. I think my work passes for good enough, and you are only a 580 and a cord away from my rig. the 580 is alot of money, no doubt, but it is a GREAT flash. It works for me, and I literally HATE using strobes.

Any flash will work with a sync cord.
"Old" Sunpaks will not do ETTL.
Newer Sunpak flashes like this one (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/103189-REG/Sunpak_040C_PZ_4000_AF_TTL_Flash.html#specificatio ns) will do ETTL, but I'm not sure wether they can be used as slave.
However, I'd never buy a flash without a tilt and swivel head. YMMV.

Another option may be Sigma's EF 530 DG Super which, I believe (but you'd better check by searching PotN) will work with the 7D'd wireless flash control. It's almost a 580 EX but for the price of a 430EX.

just read areview on these and it said they can serve as both master and slave in a canon setup. if thats the case i have to believe they work with the 7d wireless. Nissin has some tilt/swivel options that aren't high tech but could be good budget lights.
