They're sold new for retro hipsters like me :D

It didn't come with any film but I know the lab down the street has Portra and Ultra NC/VC on sale for 25% off in the 120 size.

The other night I was being told about these things and how cheap/great they are to play around with.

I have a 120FN that I used a lot in college. I think I want to get the 35mm adapter just for easier processing, plus it exposes the film all the way through the sprocket holes. I actually like the N better than the FN because the N (if I'm not mistaken) has a hotshoe while the FN has a built in flash. While using a holga with radio transmitters and off camera flash might be a bit overkill, I think it would renew my interest in the camera. :p

I don't think he owns any of those fancy britches, we can count ourselves lucky he even got dressed.

Enjoy the Holga I promise to laugh at you if I run into you on the streets (of course you can laugh back and you likely will).

BTW how many megapickles does it have I bet my little P&S has more.

Oh and have a good New Year may it be photographically brilliant!!!

I wanted some semblance of resolution so you can make out the subject of the photo if it is people, so I went with the 120. It is cool though that the 35mm adapter would expose all the way around the sprockets! Vancouver still has a pretty strong film scene so there isn't much trouble getting 120 run around here.

Ah damn I didn't realize my monocle had dropped off before we took that photo!

I wish! my problem isn't so much finding the 120 film as it is the cost of processing. If I was still souping my own black and white negatives I probably wouldn't mind, but finding a place around here that processes 120 color for less-than-expensive is exceedingly difficult.

I haven't run C-41 in a long time... the two pro labs here do 120 dip and dunk for $5. Is that out of line or pretty cheap?

Where do you live? Processing is pretty cheap. My C-41 and E-6 are about $5 a roll.

Funny but I thought the same thing! I didn't want one that needed batteries and had an onboard flash but I'm totally going to experiment with the hotshoe and OCF; probably just a hotshoe to sync cord adapter for now.

Congratulations! I love my holga. Not everyone gets it though so I wouldn't bother trying to explain. Slide right up next to someone with expensive gear in a typical photo op spot, take out your holga and watch them scratch their heads :)

Nice...although be forewarned that these cameras aren't that durable. I still have a Holga that I don't use because the the shutter doesn't work properly (lost the spring that returns the shutter disc in the closed position).

The shutter is listed as 1/100 or so but there are various places on the net that say the aperture is either f/11 or f/13. I'm probably over thinking it but I go by sunny 16 and I want to have an idea what the two settings are on the aperture dial -- cloudy and sunny. Anyone know? It is a new model 120N.

Stupid film store is closed today :D

No suggestion here but I had to share that I got the Holga 135 for Christmas. Put in my first roll which I have yet to use up. All I can say at this point is how wierd it feels to have virtually no control over camera settings and that I need to remind myself to take off the lens cap :).

I shoot mine with the thought that it is f/11 sunny and f/8 cloudy. I am pretty sure that's what was in the manual (paper flier in the box :)) so maybe that's where I got it? Every camera is a little different and you won't know how "special" yours is until you run a couple rolls through it.

Ah good point! I'm sure each one has its own actual EV between the mechanical spring shutter and questionable build of the plastic lens :)

Nice! We'll have to start a Holga thread. I'm just going to scan my negs on a flatbed I think rather than bother with printing proofs.

I have one roll of expired film I am willing to donate to the cause. Get it started and I'll work on some pictures this week.

You're probably better off using the new Ektar 100 in 120 size instead of the Porta line. Ektar is newer with next to zero grain and does well with exposure latitude/dynamic range.

I've never tried the Ektar film but the Portra is nice. I have used both kinds and the results are good out of my Bronica. Is the Ektar c41 processing?

With a holga image quality isn't as important as composition and creativity. The camera has a lot to be desired in the quality control department. It's more of a fun creative outlet.

I've never used MF film before, but Ektar is color negative film.

You don't want Ektar for people pics (stick with Portras for those). It has a bit of a red hue to it. Great for landscapes, though.

It's not C41.

Ektar is C-41. Any lab that can do color negatives can process Ektar, including the 1 hour places.

Indeed; Ektar is a standard process color neg film. It was our go to film for press stuff but for personality, I'll choose Portra or Ultra NC any day of the week.

I will have to grab some when I get to that side of town this week...

I was going to suggest you check out the new Fuji instant camera since you seem to like your new plastic camera, but when I looked at them on Amazon it seems that they tripled in price

I am pretty sure mine was bought for about $35 but now they are $75 - $100ish???

I've got something good to use it on today but no film! My lab/film store has been closed over the holidays and now I expect most, if not all, places downtown that carry 120 are closed today

I've read that the apertures on the new ones are f/8 and f/11.

I did the "flock" mod on my 120N [spray the non-sensitive interior parts and back matt black] to reduce some internal reflections.

So far I've run off around 6 rolls of 120 through mine [Ilford HP5+ and Fuji Superia] with, shall we say, variable results

It's a charming bit of kit though and that back to basics stuff makes me chuckle when I use it. And indeed, don't forget the lens cap

also this camera requires sunlight... which we've had exactly 2 days of in about 3 weeks. I will get some scans up though!

There's no rule against posting them in this thread, but there's also the film thread (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=727911).
