Dual Meet, strobed HS Wrestling, shot from floor level. Two strobes, same channels on top of backboards directed down toward opposite end of mats, say 10:00 and 2:00. Fired at 50%.

(* almost the same set up: more details (http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2544/4198534851_b82c8de203_o.jpg) *)

almost all photos cropped and untouched. a few have been level corrected. No other PP.

1) 7D; 135 mm; 1/250; f/2.8 ISO 100 - two strobes fired, crossing, at 50%

5) 7D; 115 mm; 1/250; f/2.8 ISO 100 - two strobes fired, crossing, at 50%

6) 7D; 300 mm; 1/250; f/2.8 ISO 100 - two strobes fired, crossing, at 50%

7) I try this every so often in wrestling and it tends to work out about 15% of the time. The series with these photos was pretty cool IMO, but two other bursts from this match simply were throw aways.

7D; 300 mm; 1/320; f/2.8 ISO 100 - two strobes fired, crossing, at 50%

Nice shots, look good on my laptop. Wish I could strobe like that.

I definitely like the two strobe firing look better than the previous one at a time look.

Good action and lighting.. however I feel that the lighting is a bit strong in a few of them vinny. But other than that nice work.

I see that black bar creeping up on the last one shot at 1/320. Same happens to me with the AB 1600's and Skyports.

I actually try to get the hotspots indoors. I really like the shiny look you get off the uniforms as well as that magazine color brightness. I know many still like the fill light, but I am all for the rap around lighting. Fir example, #3 is not a top keeper for me, where as 1 and 6 are the exact lighting I strive for.

yeah, although I jumped to 320 on purpose to get the shadow bar. AT times it is too dark, but here it creates a mist effect or vignette perspective. I will take a photo from that series of burst and give it a "300" (the movie) effect for the highlight reel.

1 and 6 arent that bad... those are good IMO.. shadows arent horrible and light is not as harsh.. but the others lol

my damn connection at work will not allow me to view these pics. I can see lots of nude women on the G&N forum, but not this. How dumb.

I'll look again when I get home, but when you say strobed, are you talking canon flashes or actual monolights or flash heads attached to packs?

How do you fire them, PW?

Okay, I just visited your web site and was able to view many of the pics. I like your lighting and exposure. Also very sharp shots.

One criticism I hope you don't mind. While I didn't look at all your shots, many of the action shots show no faces at all, and some that do show no eyes or closed eyes. Are these considered good shots? And I mean that respectfully. I usually always delete those type shots. Maybe I shouldn't. I know how difficult it is to get wrestler's faces as they usually press their head/faces into their opponent's bodies.

Vinny, I like those. Several years ago I shot the MHSSA wrestling championship and we were only allowed to use the on camera flash. It was all up to the head referee if they we going to allow use to use strobes or flashes. You nailed some great action there!!! :)

I'm home and I can see them. Excellent shots. Can you tell me, please, why you shoot at 1/250? Is that high a shutter speed necessary for sharp results? I find if I shoot that high I'm always underexposing. In fact, I have to be at least 400-800 ISO to shoot 160th at 2.8.

If you've got a second and don't mind looking at not very good work, though I try and try, please have a look here and critique for me. Thanks.

Mdjak,

are you strobing your shots? from the looks of it you are but at the same time I can not tell.. If you are, push up your flash power. That will help tremendously.

That is the max SS when using flash without a blackout area, see the last photo above where I hit 320 to try to grab that natural bottom vignette. As I am aware, the Mark III (and IV I assume) can get faster SS without the black bar.
