Breaking the rules can sometimes be a wonderful thing! The second one is really nice! The colors are great! The first one is good too, but I think it needs a little trimmed off the top and bottom.

I hate the rule of thirds. Composition is never that simple and the surroundings always play a part. Great shots, thanks for sharing!

I love the first...
Funny.. it actually doesn't break the rule of thirds... it just only adhered to it a fraction.. say maybe a third?
Great looking shots!

Good point.
Where is this pond? I might like to visit someday.

They are both *really* nice. Lends to the term "painting with light", I think they both look like paintings. :)

I only have one rule:

Really nice work. I prefer the first one. I decided to try to understand why it struck me as the better photo and all I can come up with is that it seems more "dynamic" where as the second one seems more "static." Both are really nice shots and someone else would problably have the opposite reaction. Thanks for sharing.

The "Rule of Thirds" is just one of many guidelines for composition. But you figured that out! Nice pitures.

I love the pictures. Great composition, very artsy. I always thought photography should be fun and artsy. It is not artsy if we all need to be in the same box (rules).
Keep up breaking the rules, it works great.
By the way I love St. Louis. I bring my chemistry club there every year and we tour the town (Science Center, Zoo, Smokin' Als, etc..) and go to a Cardinals game.

I think the second one is somewhat broken into thirds. The two sides of taller trees and the middle section with the arch and lower trees. Not equal thirds, but close (enough).

The rule of thirds is just a RULE nothing more - rules are made to be broken and bent to get the best effects!
Well done - great image and a nice sunset?
