Images losing punch when making Wallpaper?

Hi guys, let me know if this is NOT the right forum for this, but I would appreciate any help that is offered.

I've noticed that many times I have tried to turn a nice pic into Wallpaper on my PC that when it pops up on the Desktop, it seems to lose punch. Less saturation, less contrast...

Has this happened to any of you? Any solutions you know of?
