i've been debating between the 70-200L and the sigma 70-200 2.8 for awhile now and after coming to the conclusion that there is no "right" answer i ordered the canon.
i figured that i can sell the canon used for almost what i paid for it -- $550 delivered -- if it doesn't work out for me.
here's what i like about the canon:
-- lighter and smaller (easier to hand hold and carry)
-- cheaper
-- canon L quality
-- better resale
here's what i like about the sigma:
-- black
-- f 2.8
-- comes with tripod mount
-- excellent price on older model ($600)
so what it really boiled down to for me was f2.8 vs. light weight and smaller size.

Really? Does anybody really pay that much or are You just exagerating ;-)
$1000 is more than I paid for my 70-200 here in Denmark with the rediculous high prices.

Maybe I did exagerate a bit, but not too much. Uneducated bidders are known to spend alot more on these lenses than they are worth new from BH, Buydig, ect.

Hmm. Today I sold my 17-40 f/4 L on a danish auction site for 4.500 ($750) danish kroners, new price is 6.500 ($1083).

i think about $550 or so for a used 70-200L f4 is about average for ebay. with paypal and listing fees about $40-$50 of that goes to ebay.

I worried about whether I'd need the tripod mount, but got reassurance from this forum. The only thing the mount would do is make the combination balance better on the tripod. It's certainly unnecessary for the weight of the f/4, and would just get in the way most of the time.
You've made the right decision. I'm very happy with mine. You'll even find the colour is better than you expected (that is, if you're thinking it will be the opposite of black ...).
