no doubt this question has been posed before, but i searched and didn't find anything. i use photoshop elements to work with photos but would like a suggestion for a simpler program that will allow for 'quick and dirty' viewing. any suggestions?

Bridge included with Elements is pretty good. Any reason why you don't use it? Also, what opertating system are you using?
You can view images on a PC by navigating to the image folder. To make it easier navigate to the folder you can create a shortcut to the image folder. Then drag the shortcut to your desktop and use the shortcut every time you need to open and view the pictures. It's quick and dirty......
One limitation...you can't see RAW images using this process.

Adobe Bridge is my choice. It's quick and easy :)

Bridge if using CS 4 or later, or use IrfanViewer/ACDSee/Faststone Viewer.
