Here two flower shots taken with 400d, no pp C&C please

Exposure, lighting, and focus look pretty good. Backgrounds are pleasantly out of focus, although the red in the second competes with the flower. Colors are appealing. It's pretty remarkable that you didn't post process.

An off-center, tighter composition would be more effective in my opinion. There's also a scratch or an errant spider web in the bottom right quadrant of the second that you should eliminate.

Roses are pretty common subjects but that first flower is pretty neat looking and I'm drawn to it a lot more.

Nice shots - good focus and light. But If your 400D has the same "problem" as mine had: everything turns out slightly darker than expected and that shows in both shots.
I agree with joedl that a tighter crop - slightly off center - may make the photos more interesting. "Rule of Thirds".... but sometimes you have to abandon all rules and do your own thing :)
