I bought a 3rd party battery for a spare for my Rebel and can't get it to work. It's a Merkury, says:
7.4V 15mAh
Li-ion Battery Pack
Replaces Canon BP-511
I charged it in twice in two different chargers, both show that it's fully charge but when I put it in the camera it won't power up. Is it because it's a 3rd party and not Canon? What do you guys think?

Where did you buy it from?
I have heard nothing but good things about batteries bought from www.sterlingtek.com. You may want to try them.

Got it from www.stop4camera.com (http://www.stop4camera.com), bought the camera from them also. Their service sucks.

There is dreaded effect on LION batteries as well as other rechargable batteries. They last a long time on the shelf so long as they are never used. The very first time they are activated the leak discharge will begin. The leak discharge is very slow. It might take ayear or longer before the leakage becomes damaging to the point that no amount of charging will resusicated it. My take on your case is the battery you got was used and left on the shelf to died.

I bought 2 batteries from www.sterlingtek.com about a year ago for abou $12.00 each and still using it so I would also recommend sterlingtek.

if you use your original canon battery after tryin out your 3rd party and it works then it (the 3rd party battery) is dead..If even after charging it wont turn on the camera.then its a nice paperweight.

be sure to check out the battery sticky.

I have noticed that sometimes the 3rd party batteries do not charge in the Canon chargers very well. I have 2 3rd party batteries which I have them charge on an Ambico universal charger while the 2 Canon batteries that I have will charge in the 2 Canon chargers that I have.

When I tried to charge the generics in the Canon charger the generics would not charge. Put them in the generic charger and the charge without a hitch and will keep up (timewise) with the Canons.
