Do Canon have different colours for the straps they use with their cameras depending on model, and anyone know where I can get one with 1D embossed on it.

All the straps that came with my xxD and 1D cameras are black with white lettering and red trim stripes. All the 1D and the 30D straps have "Canon" and "EOS" embossed on them. The 5DmkII and the 7D straps have the camera model also embossed on them. So, if you're looking for the original Canon straps, I doubt you'll be able to find any that has "1D" embossed on it.

Thanks for that PacAce. I've seen the 5 and 7D straps and quite like them I was just hoping someone did one for the 1D. Mine as your's came with a black strap with red trim but with gold lettering.

Gold? The only gold lettering I have is on the strap that came with my Nikon camera. Actually it's more like yellow. :D

I've never seen a gold lettered Canon strap. I wonder if the straps are different for different regions of the world.

BTW, when I said my straps were white lettered, I should have said they were silver lettered.

Interesting that's got me thinking my 1D is from Hong Kong I put the strap changes down to models

I just checked my strap collection - the 5D2 and 7D have the model on them, in silver embroidery. The 1D3 strap has gold letters, but no model name.

Your 1D3 strap is gold? Hmmm, maybe my strap is still in the box since all the ones that are out have silver letters. I'll go check....

My 1D Mk II strap ( original strap according to seller) is black with red trim and has Canon EOS DIGITAL embossed in silver lettering.

Nope, it wasn't in the box but then I checked the strap that's on my Quantum Turbo 2x2 battery pack and sure enough, it's got light gold lettering on it. And here I thought the strap was just dirty because all the others were whitish (silver) in color. :D

I just checked the CP-E4 battery pack and it's got a strap with letters that are darker gold in color. And the strap is made of a finer cloth than the other straps. So this must be the strap for the 1D3 and the other one on the Turbo must be for the 1D2.

I never noticed the difference in the colors of the lettering on these straps before. OK, now I can claim that I've seen a Canon strap with gold lettering. ;)

I guess mine isn't a 1D strap :(

My 20D and 5D straps are black with red striping and silver "EOS Digital" on 'em. The D60 came with black strap and painted-on EOS Digital in white. The gold on the 1D3 strap is very subtle - you almost have to hold it up to the silver-stitching straps to tell the difference. Get yours under a good light.

I have the 1D2 and the 1D3. I don't know which strap goes with which 1D but one strap has the subtle gold embossing but the rest of the strap looks like the one for the 5D2 and the 7D. I thought maybe this was the strap for the 1D2. The other strap has a distinct (dark) gold thread used for the lettering. And the strap itself is made of a finer cloth than the other straps I have. And the leather on the underside if nicer, too. It also has a nice cloth piping along the two sides of the strap. So I thought this was the one for the 1D3. Do I have them reversed?

I also have a strap for the 30D but the strap has a bluish tint to it compared to the black of the straps for the other cameras.

No 1D2 here, but the 1D3 strap is a finer cloth than any of the others. Had to take it out of the plastic to look! The camera's never had anything but the POTN strap on it.

Yeah, same here about the POTN straps on the cameras. BTW, does your 1D3 strap have the red cloth piping sewn along the sides of the strap? If so, then it's the one I have that I thought belonged to the 1D3. The 1D2 strap has the red trim woven in as part of the strap.

I guess mine isn't a 1D strap

What differentiates the 1D strap from the non-1D strap is the red trim on the thin strap that goes through the strap loop of the camera. The non-1D straps do not have a red trim (it's all black) on the thinner strap (whatever that's called). So if yours has a red trim on the thinner strap also, then you've got a 1D strap.

Ahhh.... then I guess it is a 1D strap .

They also gave me a dark charcoal strap with Canon EOS Digital embossed on it that was also on the body which I believe is an old Rebel strap. I use that one for my 70-200 2.8 IS case.

Wow I didn't think a thread on camera straps would provoke so much intrest.

I wouldn't have known about the red edging on the 3/8" webbing if you hadn't posted that, since until this thread the strap had never been out of the plastic bag. The red on the 3/8" webbing is woven in.

My D60 strap resembles the straps I've seen on some Digital Rebels, just black webbing with the trim and logos painted on in white. All the other straps have embroidered lettering and multiple colours.

Yeah! Probably because people like Jon and I have never really looked at the original Canon strap very closely. As soon as the camera came in, I (and I'm sure Jon, too) immediately put on the POTN strap which had been ordered ahead of time and just waiting for the new camera to arrive. In my case, I just threw the original Canon straps, stll in the plastic bag, into a drawer where all my other unused camera paraphernalia are thrown in. :)

Just goes to show that we don't always discuss technical things here, unless the discussion on the weave and the lettering on camera straps is considered technical. ;) :)
