What do you all use for close-up photography? Do you use the +1, +2, +4 screw-on?
Or do you use a special lens?

I use the Canon 100mm F2.8 macro lens, which IIRC is about $450. linky (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=194451&is=USA).

Newest DG version of the Sigma 105mm EX f2.8 which has a great performance/price ratio. VERY happy with it but there are some very good options from Canon and Tamron too that have been discussed a lot recently on this forum.

I have two options.

Most times I use my Sigma 105mm macro lens.

Other times I use Kenko extention tubes with my other lenses. For example, if I want to take a picture of a butterfly that won't let me get close enough to use the 105 mm lens I will put an extention tube between the camera and my Sigma 50-500 mm lens.

If I was going to use closeup filters I would avoid the single element variety an get the two element kind form either Canon or Nikon.

Using the Macro setting on my EF28-135IS but not really happy with that solution.

At the moment i´m jumping back and forth deciding which Macro lens to buy. Any (good) suggestions?

up to now closeup filters 2+ and4+ on a 85 f1.8 works quite well but might get an ex tube to pull things in a little more.

Plus, a reversed 50 mm lens or reversed 18-55 kit lens might be helpful and not as expensive as a dedicated macro lens.

Best regards,

100mm Canon and MP-E65mm. The 100mm gets most use though as it is easier to use.

I prefer using a bellows. Lots of flexibility and > life size macro. But need fast lenses and focusing is a chore. I don't know why Canon don't make an EF bellows?

This (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=80205) and this (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=80001) were taken with my Sigma 70-200 and extension tubes. With all three tubes and the focal length set at about 100mm the working distance is over a foot and the magnification is 1:1. With my tamron 28-75 and a single tube, working distance ranges from 5 inches (75mm) to nearly zero (about 35mm) and magnification is well above 2:1.

the only drawback I can see to extension tubes is that it's inconvenient, as you can't use the setup for anything but close-ups. The advantages are - 1) cheap, and 2) very flexible if you have multiple lenses.

I use my compact digital Fuji F10. Takes incredible macro images plus its a great camera too. Paid $340 for it which is less than someone responded here as to the price of their macro LENS. :)
