Part of the 'context' for judging 'good' is price ... if you have someone offering one or you have seen one for sale then what is the price? If buying new then I would look at the recent threads on Macro options and then decide which meets your own price/performance needs. If this was £100 SH then I would say it was very good indeed, if £300 then I would be looking at alternative options too. I was certainly on my shortlist initially, along with Canon and SIgma offerings.

How would you compare it to Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 macro ?

I think the tamron, as do most of my pro shooter friends, is the best in its class for sharpness and color. This is the 28-70 of the macros for tamron. 6 year warranty. Hood. Pouch. Very sweet lens fo rthe price.

Take a look in the macro section and search under my name and you'll see what a clutz can do with this lens.
