new camera advice

I am going camera shopping with a friend tomorrow. He is planning a trip to India in the next month and will undoubtably be visiting some amazing places. He has no camera knowledge and will most likely be shooting fully automatic the whole time. What camera would you suggest for him? I was thinking either the G11 which may be a bit pricey for him or the SD980. I know i would take my 40d and a bag of lenses but that is way to much for him. Any thaughts and suggestions are welcome.

The G series is awesome :)

If he only wants something tiny (the G is bulky) check out the S90 or the very small SD range. I have the SD1200 IS and adore it to bits. SD1200 photos on my blog here (http://www.kristinsnews.blogspot.com) (unless marked as another camera mostly). I think the SD980 is a good little one, too.
