Nice shot, I like the composition with the people it adds more than just a pic of the beach. I don't know if you are have tried a polarizer filter or not but it would have came in handy here to cut the glare off the water and possibly give it some more depth.
I'm not a pro but I love the way a polarizer adds to outdoors shots it's almost like cheating. The polarizer also gives the sky some depth and prevents the washed out look. This shot reminded me of a shot that I took while in Hawaii last month. I did use the polarizer and there was quite a bit of glare prior without it. As you can see you can see the depth and even the sand in the waves.
Of course this is just my opinion.

A big thanks for the tip. After comparing the two shots, a polarizer will definately be something i'll be picking up this week. Summertime's around the corner and I'll definately be hanging out on the shore more often. Got any other advice for shooting on the beach?

Yes, actually one more if you didn't already know but you only need to purchase one polarizer for your two lenses. If you purchase one in a 58mm for your kit lense and a step up ring from 52mm to 58mm for your (50mm f1.8) lense then you're only out another couple of bucks. Check out bhphotovideo.com for some great deals.
Have fun this summer Juan.

Be careful. The kit lens has the end part turning with the focus. That means the polarizer will turn with it.
