Sorry, mine is solid? Do you have the hood attached? Sometimes the hoods for non-l rotate freely and 'rattle' a little.

hood not attached
The rattle sounds like a small amount of movement in what I guess is probably the focussing mechanism - I hope it's not the optics! ;)

Mine has a little bit of rattle in it as well. Always did, and I've had it for well over a year. It's normal, I'd say.

Yep, mine too but it's not much. I had to shake it next to my ear to hear it. And the lens takes fantastic shots...

Yep, mine rattles too. I think it's that slight amount of play in the focussing ring. My guess is that there is some kind of clutch mechanism that allows you to grab the ring in AF and manually focus.

Yes, mine has a slight rattle also. Seems it's a common trait of this lens.

Hopefully everyone here is shaking their lens really hard to get this rattle. I am gently shaking my copy of the lens and don't hear anything.........remember, this is not an L lens so excessive shaking might put the focus elements out of alignment.

Loose here too. But doesn't effect the image quality or focus at all.
You could be forgiven for thinking it a fault. It is however, a characteristic – apart from the one poster, so far. What must the 1.8 be like if it is considered much worse build quality.
A cracking lens regardless.

Hmmm. Just shook mine. Not sure if you could call it a rattle, but I guess there was a little movement inthe outer element. I guess I would expect a little movement considering the USM and magnetic motors. I'm not going to worry about it.

Hey I know I'm not invited to this thread since I don't have a 50 f/1.4, but my 50 f/1.8 don't rattle. So does that mean that my thrifty fifty is not a sifty fifty???

I'm not at home, so I can't check, but it probably rattles a bit.
I had a different oddity with mine though - the edge of the focusing ring (the rubber bit) seemed to pop up out of the groove once. I popped it back down and it's fine, so not a bother, just kind of odd. Would never expect that to happen with my 17-40 ;)

Just checked for you maty.
Does a bit, a soft sound, not metalic. Changes tone slightly when the lens is hard minimum focus.
