after you download pictures from the 20d I know most of you guys use photoshop to post process but when you are in photoshop and you need a photo to work on how do you bring it up(II know you go to file; open; but where do you open from? You can't open the EOS file utility and choose photos that way ,so what do most of you all do. I guess I am asking for your workflow procedures. Thanks for all help and coments!

It depends on how you are downloading the files - directly from the camera or by way of a card reader, dragging and dropping, copying or just letting some utility do it, like the XP downloader or Canon's downloader. No matter what, those files have to be stored somewhere. The first place to look - the one usually used by default by a utility - is the My Pictures directory. If they are not there run a search with Start Menu/Search typing in the name of a known photo file (IMG_xxxx.jpg).

Here's my workflow in a nutshell

- Download the raw files from the card via a card reader to a special area on the hard drive. I usually make a folder for the date of the shooting unless it was some special event then I use that name.
- I use breezebrowser to quickly go through the images and get rid of the obvious losers. I then use the batch rename function in bb based on my own personal naming convention
- Burn the original RAW files to DVD so they are safe in the event of a hard drive failure
-Process the RAW files using C1. These go to a folder attached to the folder that I am working in.
-Use Photoshop to tweak/crop/fix the processed TIFF files and prepare for web.
-In some cases I will save the resulting TIFF files to DVD just so I don't have to redo them in the case I need to go back to them.

All in all it is a very quick process. I don't use the Canon software in my workflow at all.

so canon's downloader will make a file in "my pictures" cool I didn't know that because there is always one in my pictures because thats were I always save my photos to aaafter I get them off the camera. Thanks guys for your input. I wish I had cs1 or something good. All I got right now is elements 2 and photoshop 5. CS won't work on my computer because I have windows ME! I know I know real sucky. If I wore the pants in my house I could get a spiffy new computer, but I don't wear the pants after coughing up funds for my new 20d and 3 real nice pieces of glass to compliment the 20d. The wife was not to happy about taking 3 grand+ out of our savings for our downpayment on our house! OH well, thats another forum and another time! thanks !!!

after installing the drivers for my XT, I just plug the camera in, turn it on, then it shows up under my computer. i then just double click on it and copy and paste the images wherever i want to. been working fine for me so far.

how many people use a card reader and how many people use a cable from their camera?
i use a card reader but i'm wondering whether this might be bad for the card in the long run?!

sorry to hi-jack the thread.. :-P

Not to worry! I'm on my 5th CF camera and have pulled the card out hundreds of times and never broken anything. The pins in a CF slot are nicely self-centered and the insertion force is not that high. Personally I use a SanDisk firewire reader. It is extremely fast with an Ultra II 2 GB card. I also carry a sandisk CF to PCcard slot adapter with my laptop. They are about $5 and are also extremely fast. USB2 card readers are extremely variable. Some are acceptable and some are extremely slow even though they are USB 2.0. See:

Using a card reader won't be bad for the card. Of course care and attention must be paid when inserting the card into the camera or the card reader but this is more common sense than anything.

There are some that feel that downloading direct from the camera puts unneeded draw on the batteries.

I make a folder on my computer, and just download them to there. I can fiddle with them later, but at least they're off the camera at that point and I can clear them from the camera.

As for ME, its a suckie OS. Upgrade to 2000 or XP, your life will be better. I can't tell you how many of my friends thought their computer's sucked and were going to purchase new ones, until I had them upgrade.
