I was searching for a Hoya CPL filter and found this 3-pack (http://www.amazon.com/Hoya-58MM-Pack-Digital-Filter/dp/B00309CJIE/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1262185231&sr=1-3).

Now, I know what a UV filter is, but what's a NDx8? Is this something that's worth having? (or even the UV filter for that matter)? I know I used a UV filter on my 35mm film camera, but are they needed on a digital?

NDX8 is a 8 stop neutral density filter. Allows you to expose for longer without over exposing. You don't need UV but a good one can reduce haze.

Not on a digital camera. There's already a filter to block UV from hitting the sensor.

Its a 3-stop neutral density filter...sure wish that filter manufacturers would standardize into a common terminology to identify the ND strength.

To the OP: Most "decent" UV or 3-stop ND filters individually would cost as much as the kit price. At best, I'd say the filters in the kit are so-so. My advice would be to pick up filters separately as you go along, starting with a good quality CPL. I personally don't use UV filters unless I'm shooting in conditions that require some protection, but that's a personal choice for each photographer. The CPL is the most versatile filter that you can have, all the more reason to get a good one. Hoya has a better line of CPL's than what's being offered in the kit, as well as the MRC polarizer by B+W.

Really, so it's just for protection then?

Yep...that, and improving the dealer's bottom line. ;)
